2020.09.22 16:43 CupcakeCommercial666 AITA for taking my good friend and her two kids on vacation with me instead of my sister and her kids even though she said she needed the break?

This happened when I was 24 and my sister is STILL pissed about it and thinks I was the asshole. I just want to see if I am or not.
Long story short; I won a raffle at my job for an all expense paid family vacation. It wasn't a super fancy prize to Disneyland or anything crazy. It was just a nice 3 day stay at this little beach house Inn place. It was for 4 people. I asked new bf at the time to go but he couldn't because school.
I told nobody I won but when I came down to visit my family for the weekend my Sis was there with my niece/nephew, who are the two brattiest kids I've met thanks to Sis not disciplining them EVER. I love them but she lets them get into everything and never watches them unless someone (me or our mom) yells at her to get off her butt and watch them. Visiting is always a chore because I end up watching them to give our mom a break. It's pathetic.
I'd considered inviting them to come before I arrived. But the longer I was there the more I hated the idea. By the time I was packing up to go home I knew I wasn't inviting them. She dumped them on me the entire time (like usual) and I knew if they came it would turn into me babysitting them while SHE had a vacation.
So I didn't mention it. Next day I told my friend Megan cuz she has two kids (older than Sis's kids and very well behaved) and she's a single working mom who could use the vacay. I offered to invite her along if she would pay for the gas to get us all to/from there and she happily agreed.
We went, had a blast, I got a pretty good tan, we ate lots of buffet food and did fun family type activities all weekend before coming back.
I posted some pics I took (nothing in your face, just a couple cute ones of me/us on the beach) when I got back and before lunch even rolled around Sis was blowing up my phone asking how the hell I could afford a vacation. I told her it was a raffle prize, she asked who won and I said me. She flipped her shit, demanding to know why I hadn't invited her. I was honest and said cuz I didn't want to babysit her kids for my entire vacation.
She called me an asshole, said I knew she needed a vacation and then hung up on me. Later Mom called asking why I promised niece/nephew I'd take them on vacation. I said I never told them I would? Turns out Sis told them we were all supposed to go on vacation but I ruined it and now they couldn't. So they sobbed all day. I explained my side and mom said I was mean to not invite sis/niece/nephew. But she dropped it after I said I wasn't babysitting my whole vacation.
I could have invited them but I just didn't want to. Sis thinks family should come before friends. AITA?
Edit: To those feeling sad for my niece and nephew for getting lied to about a vacation, it's all good. I took them to this kid's play place the weekend after my vacation. They ate pizza, played arcade games, got to climb this huge indoor jungle gym thing, and even ride a couple kiddie rides. They had a blast! They forgot all about the beach lol :)
Edit 2: To those saying "you should have just lied and said you saved up for the vacation"; if I did that then my sister (who thinks I secretly make 6 figures at my above minimum wage job) would have started HOUNDING me for who the hell knows how long for a ""loan"" that I wouldn't ever get back even if I *could* afford to give it. It was a lose/lose situation.
Edit 3: Omg guys I didn't force my friend to pay for all the gas like some jerk. She paid for the gas and I paid for everyone's food and drinks to/from the vacation (we stopped and got breakfast on the way and got lunch on the way back). We took my car there since her's guzzles gas and mine doesn't. We each decided these things together.
Edit 4: A bunch of people DM'd me and said I should post this on the 'entitled parents' sub so I decided why the hell not. Figured if nothing it'd give a few more people an alright read lol

Completing the 2020 Bingo Challenge: Short Story Edition
Completing the 2020 Bingo Challenge: Short Story Edition
One of the rules of the Fantasy Bingo Reading Challenge is that you can read an anthology or collection for any of the squares. I’ve always been a fan of short fiction, so I’ve occasionally used this rule to complete my Bingo Card (I used three collections outside of the Five Short Stories square last year, for example). When planning my card for the 2020 Bingo, I noticed that several of the squares fit quite well for some of the collections and anthologies I had (a Star Trek anthology for Exploration, books with colors or numbers in their names, etc.). “What if…” I wondered, “…I can do it for every square?”
Thus, my project is born: Complete my Bingo card using only books of short stories, following all the other rules of Bingo. I did not repeat a single author from one square to another, and I even made sure not to repeat editors, either.
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
A brief aside before we start, some terms I use that some may not be familiar to some:
  • Anthology: A book of short stories by multiple authors, usually assembled by an editor whose name is attached to the book (i.e. The Book of Dragons edited by Jonathan Strahan)
  • Collection: A book of short stories by a single author (i.e. Kabu Kabu by Nnedi Okorafor)
  • Short Story Cycle: A book of short stories that has its own narrative (i.e. Moral Disorder by Margaret Atwood). Some similarities with “interlinked collection,” “mosaic novel,” and “fix-up novel” (The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury being a famous example of the latter).
  • Reprint and Original: Many anthologies/collections reprint stories published previously (reprint) vs. originally written for the book in question (original). Some collections will mix it up (such as a reprint collection with one original story to encourage readers who have read the others to pick up the new book).
Why? What did I hope to accomplish by doing this particular short fiction challenge? Some of my friends will complain about the Five Short Stories square (especially the hard mode requirement to read a book), and I wanted to spite them a little bit and also demonstrate that there’s a lot of different and interesting books out there to read in that format!
Planning: The hardest thing about this was the original planning, as several books I thought would be an easy match for the square didn’t work because another anthology I planned to use already included that author, so I had to dig a bit deeper to find something that didn’t repeat any authors. Also, in past Bingo Challenges, my cards are usually quite fluid as I shift books around throughout the year. Because of all the authors I was juggling, I couldn’t easily do that (though it was vastly easier to do with collections instead of anthologies, for obvious reasons).
Numbers: For this card, I officially read 32 books for the 25 squares: One of those books was quite short, so I read an additional three to meet the length requirement. For the original Five Short Stories square, I decided to be obnoxious and read five collections. These 32 books included 1 short novel (included in one of the collections), 8 novellas, 106 novelettes, 498 short stories, and 3 poems for a total of at least 2,739,975 words (the rough equivalent of reading the first nine novels of The Wheel of Time). I read 189 different authors. In addition to the 32 books above, I read 15 “pre-Bingo” books—books I felt I needed to read to be able to read the anthology or collection I actually used for my Bingo Card. Fifteen of the 32 books were ones I already owned. Nine books I checked out from the library. Five books I bought specific for Bingo, and three books were free (gifts or free online).
1. Novel Translated from Its Original Language:
There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby: Scary Fairy Tales by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya (reprint collection)
  • Reason: I couldn’t read my first choice so I looked through my TBR list to find another SF/F collection I thought would be a translation. It also won the 2010 World Fantasy Award for Best Collection.
  • Favorite Story: “My Love” as I really liked how the characters grew apart and then back together again.
  • Recommended: Only if you like short depressing literary fiction that mostly hinge on dreams and ghosts.
  • Hard Mode: Yes, Pretrushevskaya is a woman.
  • Other Options: I really wanted to read Xia Jia’s A Summer Beyond Your Reach, but she had a story in another anthology I read. I also considered one of Ken Liu’s Chinese SF/F anthologies (Invisible Planets or Broken Stars). I read Jurado & Lara’s Spanish Women of Wonder last year. Etgar Keret’s Fly Already, Kenji Miyazawa’s Once and Forever, or Yoko Ogawa’s Revenge also looked promising.
2. Setting Featuring Snow, Ice, or Cold:
Frozen Fairy Tales edited by Kate Wolford (original anthology)
  • Reason: I literally searched snow and anthology and this was one of the early options.
  • Favorite Story: tie between “The Stolen Heart” by Christina Ruth Johnson and “Death in Winter” by Lissa Sloan; the first just felt great, and the second has this haunting feel I loved.
  • Recommended: Yes; a good selection of fairy tale-inspired stories. Read during the summer, though, it felt really cold.
  • Hard Mode: Yes, every story is in a snowy or cold setting.
  • Other Options: I’m kind of mad that I didn’t come across Snowpocalypse: Tales of the End of the World (edited by Clint Collins and Scott Woodward) until after I read my original choice. I like silly titles.
3. Optimistic Spec Fic:
Ingathering: The Complete People Stories by Zenna Henderson (short story cycle, 1 original to this book)
  • Reason: I’ve had a copy of this book for a couple years, and I needed an excuse to read it. It’s actually an omnibus of Henderson’s two People collections plus some previously uncollected stories. I’ve read the first People collection (Pilgrimage) several times people).
  • Favorite Story: I’ll say “Ararat” here, but the first six stories (the original Pilgrimage collection) are amazingly wonderful and heartwarming.
  • Recommended: Yes, absolutely. Zenna Henderson deserves more attention.
  • Hard Mode: Yes. <3
  • Other Options: If Henderson’s book hadn’t worked out, I considered Heiroglyph (edited by Ed Finn & Kathryn Cramer) and Salena Ulibarri’s two Glass and Gardens anthologies (Solarpunk Summers and Solarpunk Winters), but that would’ve required juggling my card.
4. Novel Featuring Necromancy:
The Book of the Dead edited by Jared Shurin (original anthology)
  • Reason: I asked Jared Shurin (pornokitsch) if he knew of any anthologies with a necromantic theme, and he rattled off five or six options before remembering that he himself had edited an anthology about mummies. I don’t know how you forget something like that.
  • Favorite Story: tie between “Old Souls” by David Thomas Moore and “Three Memories of Death” by Will Hill (non-SF/F)
  • Recommended: Yes, but it’s out of print! Several of the stories were reprinted in Paula Guran’s The Mammoth Book of the Mummy, including “Three Memories of Death.”
  • Hard Mode: No, through several do have mummies as protagonists.
  • Other Options: I was considering Brian McNaughton’s The Throne of Bones since the description seemed rather death-magicky. At this point, the Paula Guran anthology above would probably be a good choice.
5. Ace/Aro Spec Fic:
Life Within Parole, Volume 1 by RoAnna Sylver (collection, mix of reprint and original)
  • Reason: A friend found this on Claudie Arseneault’s asexual recommendations website, which was good, but I felt I needed to read her novel Chameleon Moon first to understand the collection. I’m glad I did.
  • Favorite Story: Reluctantly “Phoenix Down” as it felt the most self-contained.
  • Recommended: Only if you loved Chameleon Moon, which I only recommend if you like a sample of the writing. It’s amazingly diverse in representation, but my frustrations with the novel related more towards its pacing and worldbuilding. Plus I don’t like superheroes.
  • Hard Mode: Yes, half the stories have an asexual or aromantic protagaonist.
  • Other Options: My original choice was Common Bonds: An Aromantic Speculative Anthology edited by Claudie Arseneault, C.T. Callahan, B.R. Sanders, and RoAnna Sylver, a Kickstarter-funded book. However, due to the pandemic, the publication was pushed back, and I didn't want to wait any longer. I also seriously considered Chuck Tingle’s Not Pounded in the Butt.
6. Novel Featuring a Ghost:
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M. R. James (collection, mix of reprint and original)
  • Reason: I just searched ghost anthology, and this was a top result. I have actually never heard of M. R. James before this year, but I gather he’s a huge influence since he’s written so many ghost stories.
  • Favorite Story: “The Mezzotint” as it was the one that creeped me out the most.
  • Recommended: Yes, but only if you realize that it’s got an older style to them (since this book came out in 1904), and that most of these stories won’t creep you out in the year 2020.
  • Hard Mode: No, the ghosts are either antagonists or obstacles.
  • Other Options: I actually don’t know, I stopped searching after I found the book. M. R. James does have 3 more collections of ghost stories, though (all of 4 of which have been gathered in Collected Ghost Stories by M. R. James).
7. Novel Featuring Exploration:
No Limits edited by Peter David (original anthology)
  • Reason: I read the first few Star Trek: New Frontier novels back in the late 1990s, but never finished it, so I got all the books for a personal readthrough. Star Trek is by definition perfect for the exploration square, so I read the books. However, I was reading them in publication order, so I had to read the first 14 books before I could get to the anthology!
  • Favorite Story: “Waiting for G’Doh, or, How I Learned to Stop Moving” is a rather funny story about the security officer Zak Kebron at the beginning of his career.
  • Recommended: Yes, but only if you’ve read at least the first six Star Trek: New Frontier novels (all the stories are set before the first book, but most of the characters aren’t really established until you’ve read the first four).
  • Hard Mode: Maybe, nearly all the stories feature exploration, but the plots are often about backstories for the main characters of the series.
  • Other Options: I considered James Alan Gardner’s Gravity Wells (his novel Expendable is a perfect exploration book, so I was hoping the collection would work). Past anthologies that would probably work is Federations edited by John Joseph Adams, Galactic Empires edited by Neil Clarke, and maybe Alastair Reynolds’s Deep Navigation or Galactic North.
8. Climate Fiction:
Everything Change: An Anthology of Climate Fiction edited by Manjana Milkoreit, Meredith Martinez, & Joey Eschrich (original anthology)
  • Reason: A friend recommended to me as this theme was getting difficult for me to find, as all my other options included stories by authors I had to read for other squares. This book was produced from a short story contest run by the Imagination and Climate Futures Initiative at Arizona State University and judged in part by Kim Stanley Robinson.
  • Favorite Story: “On Darwin Tides” by Shauna O’Meara, which follows a “sea gypsy” in Malaysia as she struggles in this new dystopian future.
  • Recommended: Only if the topic appeals to you—because it was a contest, the stories are mostly from amateur writers and the quality mostly shows. It’s free online, though, and there’s a second book, Everything Change II, which I’ve been told is better.
  • Hard Mode: No, most of them are apocalyptic or post-apocalypse.
  • Other Options: My original choice was Drowned Worlds edited by Jonathan Strahan, but there’s also Loosed upon the World: The Saga Anthology of Climate Fiction edited by John Joseph Adams, and I imagine a lot of solarpunk-themed books could work for this, too.
9. Novel with a Color in the Title:
The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers (original collection)
  • Reason: I already had it (it’s available on Project Gutenberg)
  • Favorite Story: “In the Court of the Dragon” which felt like one of the creepier stories to me.
  • Recommended: Honestly, no. Only half the stories are SF/F, the other half are all stories about bohemian artists in Paris. This book is known for the stories involving “The King in Yellow” play, but they didn’t really work for me.
  • Hard Mode: Yes.
  • Other Options: I considered using Judith Tarr’s Nine White Horses, the anthology Blackguards, Jack Vance’s Wild Thyme, Green Magic, Walter Jon Williams’s The Green Leopard Plague and Other Stories, Black Feathers edited by Ellen Datlow, or How Long ‘til Black Future Month? by N. K. Jemisin.
10. Any Fantasy Book Club Book of the Month OR Fantasy Readalong Book:
Sooner or Later Everything Falls into the Sea by Sarah Pinsker (reprint collection, 1 original to this book)
  • Reason: The Goodreads Book of the Month club picked it for June this year. I did own or read all the other options that were available at the time.
  • Favorite Story: tie between “And Then There Were (N-One)” and “In Joy, Knowing the Abyss Behind”
  • Recommended: Yes! There’s only one story I would rate less than 4 stars in this book.
  • Hard Mode: Yes, I actually led the discussion for the book in June.
  • Other Options: We don’t read very many collections or anthologies for the Fantasy book clubs, so my only choices were Fritz Leiber’s Sword and Deviltry (Classics club, November 2017), Mahvesh Murad & Jared Shurin’s anthology The Djinn Falls in Love and Other Stories (RAB, May 2018), and we currently have Daniel M. Lavery’s The Merry Spinster for FIF (September 2020). There’s also the Dresden Files read-along which did two of Butcher’s collections, and the Uncanny Magazine Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction/Fantasy read-along (those would’ve been rereads for me, though).
11. Self-Published Novel:
In the Stars I'll Find You & Other Tales of Futures Fantastic by Bradley P. Beaulieu (mostly reprint collection)
  • Reason: I already owned this, it was basically the oldest self-published collection I had.
  • Favorite Story: tie between “Flashed Forward” and “No Viviremos Como Presos” – both dealing with a lot of emotions.
  • Recommended: Yes, the only other stories by Beaulieu I’ve read were 2 co-written novellas, and I felt this collection was better. I haven’t read his novels so I can’t compare.
  • Hard Mode: Yes, at the time of this post, it has 18 ratings on Goodreads.
  • Other Options: There are hundreds of options, but I could’ve read Lawrence M. Schoen’s recent collection The Rule of Three and Other Stories (his other collection, Buffalito Bundle, has stories featuring The Amazing Conroy and are lots of fun.)
12. Novel with Chapter Epigraphs:
Not the End of the World by Kate Atkinson (short story cycle)
  • Reason: This was another difficult square, as I knew a short story cycle had the best chance of having epigraphs before every story. I finally found this book by Kate Atkinson. (Ironically, I realized later that my Politics choice also had epigraphs.)
  • Favorite Story: “The Cat Lover,” I guess.
  • Recommended: No, unless you like literary magical realism where stories just kind of end.
  • Hard Mode: No, all of the epigraphs are quotes from Latin or Shakespeare.
  • Other Options: Apparently, Retief! by Keith Laumer would’ve worked from my options. It really is a difficult thing because in a collection some authors might have an epigraph for a story, but not all or most of them.
13. Novel Published in 2020:
Shadows & Tall Trees 8 edited by Michael Kelly (original anthology)
  • Reason: I picked this off Locus Magazine’s forthcoming books list and bought it.
  • Favorite Story: tie between “The Glassy, Burning Floor of Hell” by Brian Evenson and “Child of Shower and Gleam” by Rebecca Campbell – the first is creepy as hell, and the second is strange and lovely.
  • Recommended: Yes, if you’re comfortable with weird or darker fantasy stories.
  • Hard Mode: No, Michael Kelly has edited several anthologies before.
  • Other Options: I had planned to use The Hidden Girl and Other Stories by Ken Liu, but I needed Liu for another square. I also considered A Phoenix First Must Burn edited by Patrice Caldwell, and I had three anthologies from Joshua Palmatier I could’ve used (Apocalyptic, Galactic Stew, and My Battery is Low and It is Getting Dark) but I needed another Palmatier anthology for another square. Any of the various “Best Science Fiction or Fantasy of the Year” type anthologies that came out in 2020 would’ve been appropriate as well (Jonathan Strahan, Neil Clarke, Rich Horton, Paula Guran, Ellen Datlow, Bogi Takács, and Jared Shurin all edit “Year’s Best” or “Best of Year”-style anthologies).
14. Novel Set in a School or University:
Sideways Stories from Wayside School; Wayside School is Falling Down; Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger; and Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom by Louis Sachar (short story cycles)
  • Reason: Strangely, one of the first books I thought of for this square. Plus, the most recent book had come out. I decided to read all four as each book is really short (only about 20,000 words per book). Only the first one or two was a reread.
  • Favorite Story: None, they’re all funny and good.
  • Recommended: Yes, absolutely. Maybe better for kids, but I smiled a lot while reading these.
  • Hard Mode: Yes.
  • Other Options: Witch High edited by Denise Little would’ve been good, but included a story by Esther M. Friesner whom I needed for another square. A Kickstarter-funded anthology, Schoolbooks & Sorcery edited by Michael M. Jones, would’ve worked, but it’s not out yet.
15. Book About Books:
Ex Libris: Stories of Librarians, Libraries, and Lore edited by Paula Guran (reprint anthology)
  • Reason: This was another difficult square because did you know that searching “book anthology” does not narrow things down at all?? I finally hit upon just searching “library anthology” which did the trick, but this one anthology predetermined at least 3 other squares because of its authors (I couldn’t use Ken Liu, Xia Jia, Amal El-Mohtar, and others because they were all in here).
  • Favorite Story: tie between “In the House of the Seven Librarians” by Ellen Klages and “Summer Reading” by Ken Liu. Klages’s story about “feral librarians raising a child” is just wonderful, and Liu’s is very, very sweet.
  • Recommended: Yes, absolutely. This also contains Scott Lynch’s excellent “In the Stacks” and I will never not say no to Kage Baker.
  • Hard Mode: No, libraries are an integral part of most of the stories.
  • Other Options: *gestures wildly* I don’t know!
16. A Book That Made You Laugh:
Explaining Cthulhu to Grandma and Other Stories by Alex Shvartsman (mostly reprint collection)
  • Reason: Alex Shvartsman edits an annual humorous SF/F anthology series called Unidentified Funny Objects (the 8th volume is out this fall), but even though I have them all, they all shared authors with other squares until I remember that I had two collections from Shvartsman, and this was one of them.
  • Favorite Story: “Things We Leave Behind” is a semiautobiographical story about books. Absolutely lovely.
  • Recommended: Yes, but I understand most won’t share his sense of humor. He also tends to write very short stories, so don’t read these for immersion.
  • Hard Mode: Yes.
  • Other Options: Books making you laugh is so subjective, so any author you like probably has something that could work (you only need one story to make you laugh after all). John Scalzi has a couple collections that could work, Connie Willis has a great sense of humor.
17. Five Short Stories:
  • Reason: To be obnoxious I decided to read five collections for this square (instead of just five short stories). I decided to read 5 that I already owned by women/non-binary people. I picked semi-randomly (Hand and McHugh), by older ones I owned (Wurts), and by a couple new ones I was excited about (Datt Sharma and Slatter).
Not for Use in Navigation: Thirteen Stories by Iona Datt Sharma (reprint collection)
  • Favorite Story: “Quarter Days” is a full third of this book, and it’s an interesting post-WWI setting with magic.
  • Recommended: Yes, they have an interesting outlook, and one of the stories has an Indian wedding in space.
Saffron and Brimstone: Strange Stories by Elizabeth Hand (reprint collection, 1 original)
  • Favorite Story: “The Least Trumps” should appeal to the booklover in every single one of us.
  • Recommended: These are definitely interesting stories, but I’d only recommend for “The Least Trumps” and “Cleopatra Brimstone.” She’s got a poetic style here that didn't always work for me.
After the Apocalypse by Maureen F. McHugh (reprint collection, 2 original)
  • Favorite Story: “Special Economics” which follows a Chinese girl trapped into working at a factory.
  • Recommended: Yes, though it’s also one of the few themed collections (versus themed anthologies) that I’ve seen, with every story dealing with apocalypse in some way.
Sourdough and Other Stories by Angela Slatter (mostly original collection/short story cycle)
  • Favorite Story: “Gallowberries” which features Patience from the Tor.com novella Of Sorrow and Such as a young woman.
  • Recommended: Yes, absolutely. Every story is in the same setting, and they all interconnect with each other. I can’t wait to read more from Slatter (I already have The Bitterwood Bible and Other Recountings).
That Ways Lies Camelot by Janny Wurts (mostly reprint collection)
  • Favorite Story: tie between “Wayfinder” and “That Way Lies Camelot” – both are great stories, the first a coming of age, and the other is bittersweet.
  • Recommended: Yes, definitely. In addition to the above, “Dreambridge” is also awesome. I wasn’t as fond of the three ElfQuest stories, but it was interesting to read Wurts’s 4 Fleet stories as I never realized she ever wrote anything close to straight science fiction.

  • Hard Mode: … Yes?
  • Other Options: This is the most open-ended square for this particular Bingo Card, especially since at the time of this post, I own 121 unread anthologies and collections.
18. Big Dumb Object:
Alien Artifacts edited by Joshua Palmatier & Patricia Bray (original anthology)
  • Reason: This was one of the books that made me realize I could do an all-short-story card. I thought the anthology’s theme would perfectly encapsulate the square.
  • Favorite Story: “Me and Alice” by Angela Penrose – a kid finds a strange artifact while digging at a site.
  • Recommended: Yes, though a few stories weren’t to my taste.
  • Hard Mode: No, while the classical BDO is present in several stories, most would fall in the wider definition being used for Bingo.
  • Other Options: I’m at a loss here, as I never looked for more after I found this.
19. Feminist Novel:
Skin Folk by Nalo Hopkinson (collection, mix of reprint and original)
  • Reason: I owned this already from a Humble Bundle.
  • Favorite Story: “And the Lillies-Them A-Blow” – a woman is inspired to reconsider her life.
  • Recommended: Yes.
  • Hard Mode: Yes, Hopkinson is a Jamaican-born Canadian.
  • Other Options: I had a few other books from the same Humble Bundle called Women of SFF. Most of them would’ve worked.
20. Novel by a Canadian Author:
The Very Best of Charles de Lint by Charles de Lint (reprint collection)
  • Reason: It appears I picked this up in 2014 for some reason (I’ve never read de Lint before this year). But he’s Canadian!
  • Favorite Story: There are honestly too many to say, but I’ll say “In the Pines” for now.
  • Recommended: Yes, yes, yes. I basically added everything he’s written to my TBR.
  • Hard Mode: Maybe, it was originally published in 2010 with Tachyon Publications, but in 2014 it was reprinted by de Lint’s Triskell Press (which is the copy I have), which would count.
  • Other Options: A friend sent me an anthology edited by Dominik Parisien called Clockwork Canada: Steampunk Fiction, though I would’ve had to juggle square to get it to work. Nalo Hopkinson is Canadian, so Skin Folk would’ve worked, too. Jo Walton has a collection called Starlings.
21. Novel with a Number in the Title:
Nine White Horses: Nine Tales of Horses and Magic by Judith Tarr (reprint collection)
  • Reason: At the time, the only collection I had with a number that I could use.
  • Favorite Story: “Classical Horses” – an absolutely lovely story that mixes real life and fantasy, and appeals to my Classics nerd background.
  • Recommended: Yes! Tarr is a wonderful writer.
  • Hard Mode: Yes.
  • Other Options: I could’ve used The Golem of Deneb Seven and Other Stories by Alex Shvartsman, Nine Hundred Grandmothers by R. A. Lafferty, and The Rule of Three and Other Stories by Lawrence M. Schoen.
22. Romantic Fantasy/Paranormal Romance:
Once Upon a Kiss: 17 Romantic Faerie Tales published by Anthea Sharp (original anthology)
  • Reason: My original first choice was a bust when I realized quickly that the stories involved love, but were not romance stories. This was an emergency backup as I was nearing the end of reading for this Bingo Challenge.
  • Favorite Story: “The Bakers Grimm” by Hailey Edwards, which is a sweet little story about baking under pressure.
  • Recommended: No. 99% of the stories are direct appeals to try to get you to buy their books. Many of the stories don’t even really feel like short stories. I had a friend who only read urban fantasy who was adamant that she hated reading short stories and I couldn’t figure out why. Now I do. Many of these read more like vignettes than proper short stories.
  • Hard Mode: No, the HEA Club hasn’t done any anthologies or collections for me to participate in.
  • Other Options: My backup would’ve been to find some paranormal romance series and look for a collection or anthology in that world, but it would’ve involved more prep reading.
23. Novel with a Magical Pet:
No True Way: All-New Tales of Valdemar edited by Mercedes Lackey (original anthology)
  • Reason: Valdemar is an easy setting to choose for this square, and even though I had stopped reading the yearly anthologies (they’re up to 13 or 14 now), I decided to grab the 8th anthology from the library.
  • Favorite Story: “A Dream Reborn” by Dylan Birtolo, a beggar girl with a gift grows a conscience.
  • Recommended: Only if you’re a Valdemar fan and you literally can’t get enough of the world (I’d recommend sticking with the novels up until the Collegium Chronicles).
  • Hard Mode: Yes, Companions can usually speak telepathically with their Heralds and a select few others.
  • Other Options: I’m sure there’s a themed anthology perfect for this, but I honestly don’t know offhand if there is one, since this was an easy choice for me.
24. Graphic Novel (at least 1 volume) OR Audiobook/Audiodrama:
Eerie Archives, Volume 1 edited by Archie Goodwin (original comic book anthology)
  • Reason: I searched “comics anthology” into my library’s digital catalog. This showed up.
  • Favorite Story: No real favorite, but I guess “Flame Fiend” by Eando Binder, about a man desperate to avoid fire.
  • Recommended: Yes, if you’re interested in 1960s horror comics anthology magazines. Each story is about 6-10 pages long, but many felt like cheesy horror to my modern eyes.
  • Hard Mode: Maybe, each story is standalone, but this book contained the first 5 issues of Eerie comics. I’m going with No because Eerie is a running series.
  • Other Options: I considered The Escapist (inspired from Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay), a Mouse Guard comics anthology, and Thrilling Adventure Hour before finding Eerie. I also though the Eisner Awards were a good source of finding potential comics anthologies, since that's a category.
25. Novel Featuring Politics:
Retief! by Keith Laumer (reprint collection)
  • Reason: I knew the main character was a problem-solving diplomat, so this was an easy pick.
  • Favorite Story: “Diplomat-at-Arms” which is a great story of following an experienced old man on a mission, and “Cultural Exchange,” a really funny bureaucratic tale (and this one is free on Project Gutenberg).
  • Recommended: Yes, with reservations. They’re all stories from the 1960s, they’re bureaucratic galactic pulp fiction where Retief always knows better than his bumbling superiors and women only show up in secretarial or minor support roles. The stories also feel a bit repetitive as a whole, so if you read these, space it out.
  • Hard Mode: No, several of the stories feature royalty.
  • Other Options: I felt like this was a nebulous category, but offhand, I’d suggest Do Not Go Quietly: An Anthology of Victory in Defiance edited by Jason Sizemore & Lesley Conner and Resist: Tales from a Future Worth Fighting Against edited by Gary Whitta, Christie Yant, and Hugh Howey for two explicitly political anthologies, and maybe something like Harry Turtledove’s interlinked collection Agent of Byzantium for an alternate history take on a Byzantine special agent.
Favorites
  • Favorite collections: The Very Best of Charles de Lint by Charles de Lint, Ingathering: The Complete People Stories by Zenna Henderson, Sooner or Later Everything Falls into the Sea by Sarah Pinsker, Sourdough and Other Stories by Angela Slatter, and Nine White Horses by Judith Tarr
  • Favorite anthologies: Ex Libris edited by Paula Guran and The Book of the Dead edited by Jared Shurin
  • Favorite overall short stories: In addition to my favorite stories in the books above, I’d also give a special place to The Very Best of Charles de Lint (“In the Pines,” “In the House of My Enemy,” “A Wish Named Arnold,” “Mr. Truepenny's Book Emporium and Gallery,” “Pixel Pixies,” “The Badger in the Bag,” “Timeskip,” “Into the Green,” “Birds,” and “Pal o' Mine”) and to Sooner or Later Everything Falls into the Sea (“And Then There Were (N-One),” “In Joy, Knowing the Abyss Behind,” “Our Lady of the Open Road,” “Wind Will Rove,” and “A Stretch of Highway Two Lanes Wide”).
  • An Aside: My father died suddenly in the middle of my reading for this challenge. The books I read from Zenna Henderson and Charles de Lint really helped me during this time, with de Lint’s book making me cry multiple times (in a good way).
The End
Sometime last year after touting one short story or another to my friends, I said, “Oh, I don’t think I read *that* much short fiction,” and they all looked at me funny for some reason.
Oh. Never mind. I get it now.
All joking aside, I’ve read SF/F magazines off and on growing up, and I always enjoyed the occasional Year’s Best Science Fiction anthology from Gardner Dozois, and Robert Silverberg’s Legends anthologies were rather formative to my growth as a fantasy reader (that’s where I read George R.R. Martin and Robin Hobb for the first time). Some of my favorite writers have done amazing short stories (in fact, I think I like Alastair Reynolds better at the short length than the novel; witness my love for his story “Zima Blue”!). Even if you don’t read more than the usual five short stories for the Bingo Challenge, please consider branching out! I hope I’ve shown with my own card how much variety is out there.
If you’re not sure where to start, your favorite author may have some short stories of their own, either in an anthology or one of their own collections. Mary Robinette Kowal is one of my favorites, and I loved her collection Word Puppets. If they’re prolific enough, they may have a “Best of” book, like The Best of Connie Willis or The Very Best of Kate Elliott. Trying one of the Year’s Best anthologies I mention under #13, Published in 2020, is also a fun way to explore short fiction.
And even though I didn’t read any for my Bingo Challenge, there are tons of SF/F magazines out there to read from on a daily, weekly, monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly schedule. My personal recommendation is for Asimov’s SF, FIYAH, and Fantasy & Science Fiction for subscription-only options, and places like Clarkesworld, Uncanny, Fireside, and Tor.com for free online stories. There are also some great magazines/sites like Beneath Ceaseless Skies and Daily Science Fiction.
Looking at award lists is a fun way to get started, as most of the major awards also have short fiction categories. Find out where they were published and try out a magazine issue or an anthology.
I’ll end this with the following:
  • an interview by our own tctippens with Jonathan Strahan over at the Fantasy Inn Podcast where they discuss not only his new anthology The Book of Dragons, but reading short fiction in general.
  • Editor Jared Shurin ( pornokitsch ) just came out with The Best of British Fantasy 2019 this past June: check it out!
  • One of my favorite short story writers is John Wiswell, and I’d like to link two of his wonderful stories: "Tank!" follows a sentient tank attending its first SF convention, and "Open House on Haunted Hill" is a very sweet story about a haunted house trying to get sold to a new family. Both stories are quite short and you can read each in just a few minutes.
  • And finally… this is what the internet should be: Naomi Kritzer's "Cat Pictures Please"

2020.09.22 01:51 nopantstime [Scheduled] The Age of Innocence, Chapters 22-27

Hi friends! It's that time again!
Well, I personally enjoyed this section a lot more than the last one. I'm finding myself a lot more interested in the chapters involving Ellen than in those focused on May. What do y'all think?
SUMMARY!
Chapter 22: The Sillertons throw a party for the Blenkers. No one wants to go because the Sillertons are “weird” - aka they don't "fit" with Society and instead choose to do different things with their lives (I'd personally rather chill with the Sillertons than stuffy Society). While people attend the party, Newland goes to look for a new horse for May, then goes to the Blenker house to see where Ellen has been living. He meets one of the Blenker kids who tells him Ellen was called to Boston.
Chapter 23: Newland goes to Boston “on business”, but really to casually run into Ellen, which he does in the park. She says her husband has sent an emissary with a letter offering money for her to come back. He suggests a boat ride, she agrees, then writes a letter to leave for the emissary. They depart on their boat ride and then secure a private dining compartment at the inn.
Chapter 24: Ellen and Newland discuss their relationship and their future in their private dining room. They’re both obviously totally in love and rather miserable without each other and they agree that as long as they can stay in each other’s lives they can bear it.
Chapter 25: Newland meets M. Rivière on the street and asks him to lunch. Monsieur declines lunch, but later meets Newland at his office to tell him that he was sent by Ellen’s husband to get her back but he no longer believes that she should go back.
Chapter 26: Sillerton and his sis are at dinner with the Archers and they discuss the Beauforts and other things. Newland reminisces on sending Ellen a letter, and her response that it’s not time to hang out yet. Sillerton and Newland talk about Ellen’s refusal to return to her husband and her financial situation stemming from this decision. Newland tells May he’s going to Washington.
Chapter 27: Mrs. Beaufort comes in disguise to Mrs. Mingott’s house and asks her to support them amidst their financial ruin. Mrs. Mingott has a small stroke in the drama and everyone gathers at her house. Newland is sent to telegram Ellen to urge her to come, and May remarks on what a pity it is that they’ll cross each other as he departs for Washington and she arrives from same.

2020.09.18 15:41 Yerbmat [Ultros] [FC][LFM] Primal Tears FC looking to make a few more friends.

Primal Tears is a Tavern & Inn themed FC located on Ultros and we are a small group of friends who have been playing together since Heavensward. We are ages 24 - 40 looking for those with the same age mindset. As a welcoming group, we are LGBTQ+ friendly. Primal Tears is a casual group with a mid-core attitude that gets serious running content and crafting. We enjoy a very adult (raunchy, goofy, nerdy, self-deprecating, inappropriate) sense of humor; all to say we are a bunch of juveniles who still find memes cool. We use Discord heavily and will regularly have drinking games and other events. We are mostly from Eastern Standard Time with a few in Central, Mountain, and Pacific.
We are a small FC that will remain a small FC and are looking to make a few new friends. We use Discord not just when gaming, but also to discuss a wide range of topics such as gaming and life and to stay sane while at work. We use it to keep up with each other even when we are taking a break from XIV. We welcome new players, returning players, and current players. We welcome couples and singles.
You might be interested in joining us if you are looking for a small, tight knit gaming community. You log in regularly and don't take yourself too seriously: We affectionately poke fun at each other. We will want to spend a week or two hanging out with you and running content and then we will either invite you to stay or ask that you find a different FC. If we love you, we will tell you to move to Crystal with the knowledge that you will NEVER leave us! People you can message in game include myself Jeremiah Myst, Cai Myst, Yukino Hatsumi, Pher Bear, Matty Bear, and Big Earl. Our FC House is Plot 6, 14th Ward Lavender Beds (Large). I can be reached on discord: Jeremiah[pound]5308
For those who are still reading, our house rules are:
House Rules.
We’re a casual group with too many responsibilities IRL - just like you. And just like you, we’re here to set that crap aside for a bit to hang out and have a good time with one another. There’s some unspoken but understood house rules in this crew:
Having a Sense of Humor is a Virtue.
Eorzea is full of adventure and things to do, and it all gets richer with good company and laughter. We may be salty at times, but we’re not mean spirited.
Being Open to Random Mischief.
Some days, we’re all about doing our best. Other days, we’re keeping count of how many times we can make others sh*t themselves during boss fights. This is the stuff good memories are made of!
18+ Only.
We’re adults and quite comfortable with our adult privileges, beverages, and profanity. This is where we unwind and hang out. No minors.
No Fn’ Drama.
Been there, done that. We’re here to play and have a good time; not have our timed sucked away from senseless drama. If that’s your cup of tea; there’s other FCs for you.
Being a Jerk is Undesirable.
Friendly banter, memes, and crew jokes are OK. It’s part of what we do. Bein’ a S-Class jerk, makin’ things tense without reason, not OK. The law of “Talk Sh*t, Get Hit” applies.
LGBTQA+ Friendly.
Our crew includes members of the LGBTQA+ community and their allies. #NOH8

2020.09.17 18:16 SloppyEyeScream Gunfighter Dad: You Can Have My Cake and Eat It!

Remember what I said? "If you wait until the last minute, it only takes a minute." I somehow, by the grace of God, and Power of Grayskull, managed to accomplish all my required tasks yesterday. I have, diagnosed, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I am very methodical and meticulous about certain things, life-or-death work being one of them. Over the years I have learned it's not necessarily important to give one hundred percent to everything. My very first First Sergeant was a great man. He was a former Delta Operator, raging prick, but a great man nonetheless. He would say, "OP. I want eighty-fucking-percent from you each day. Eighty-fucking-percent. However, when I ask for a hundred, you'd better fucking give it to me." I gave "work" eighty-fucking-percent yesterday, and managed to baseball bat the square peg through the round hole at the very last minute. It was a solid B- and a job well done.
During my course of hyper-procrastination, I had a thought provoking comment about parenting. A fellow Fuckery inquired about the "How to Adult" chapter in the Parenting Handbook. The comment took be back in time approximately sixteen years. My wife had just pissed on a magical stick and told me the most unexpected news ever, Janet Jackson had a nipple-slip during the Super Bowl halftime performance, but I had missed it because of a deployment. She also told me she was pregnant. Well fuck my tits sideways, because I was not ready to hear that. Sloppy was going to be a father.
Want to be a surgeon? Go to fucking school. Want to be a lawyer? Go to fucking school. Want to be teacher and cultivate future leaders? Go to fucking school. Want to be a parent? Pull out one fucking second too late and presto, you just hit the nine month "cook" button on vaginal-microwave. Sadly, there is no educational requirement. You don't have to have rich or poor. You can own a home or be homeless. There is absolutely zero prerequisites needed to preform, arguably, the most important and demanding job on earth; fucking parenthood.
Again, I wait to the last minute, but my wife, for some reason, really felt the need to prepare for this thing called "parenthood". She immediately went to Barnes and Noble, got some overpriced fucking latte drink, and scoured the aisles for the best "Mixed Cocktails from Under the Sink: The Parents Guide on how to Not Kill Your Child." The wife was about halfway through the book when I finally picked it up. "Maybe I should at least read chapter one!" I do what I normal do when I purchase a new book, and immediately flip through for pictures. Then I research to the author to see what qualifies him or her their specific field.
My apologies, I forget who the author was, but that's not important. What is important is this particular author had zero fucking crib-midgets or baby-cave convicts. What the fuck? Who the fuck are you to educate in a field you have zero experience with? Imagine the look on the pilots face when we finds me in the cockpit of my next international flight. "No worries friend. I got this shit. I slept at a Holiday Inn last night, and I honestly feel I am more than qualified to turn on the Christmas-light-cockpit and see if this stallion is airworthy."
I was initially pretty pissed off. The audacity of this author! Then "it" came to me. There is no real playbook for this shit. Maybe the real message was to simply "wing-it". I may have the brain of an adolescent retard, but I am, by all means, an actual adult. I can now look back at multiple moments in my life with the realization that my parents had no fucking clue. They were just winging-it. However, I severely overestimated my ability to parent when we baked Cake. I thought parenting was a wash, rinse, and repeat process. I thought I was now qualified because Kelly was still alive. Cake said, "Fuck you rules" though.
What you have read thus far is nothing more than a rant. Just a genuine bitch-session. I figure I should detail some life lessons I have learned because of Cake, the kid that occasionally makes me want to watching his feet kicking back-and-forth in a fit, but only because I have his head six inches deep in toilet water. My youngest boy (Head Shaking!), fucking Cake.
Shit Missiles
Cake had superpowers that Kelly never attained. We were initially unaware he was genetically-flawed and had "mild" soy and dairy allergies. The doctor said "mild". Well, that guy was a fucking liar. I don't call using four wet wipes to clean projectile shit from his neck "mild." I would argue for a "severe" diagnoses at the very least. That kid shit could out-shit dysentery.
Cake Brain: Poop before or after dad changes my diaper?
Cake's Asshole: During!
Cute Moments
For the most part, all the bad moments can be erased with one moment of cuteness. I could literally be five minutes out from utilizing the Safe Haven Law, and then Cake would do or say something that made me love him again. You read correct!
Cake (4YO): Can I cuss?
OP: What?
Cake: I want to cuss.
Wife: Cake. Do you know what cussing is?
Cake: Yes, but I want to say one word.
OP Brain: Fuck it. I will give you one opportunity, but please don't let me down or fuck this up.
OP: What's the F-word Cake?
The cute part; Cake literally started looking left and right, as if he was ensuring he wouldn't get in trouble. Then he softly whispered...
Cake: BIIITTTTCCCCCHHHHHH.
You done did messed up A-A-Ron. He was four though. I suppose I should celebrate that as a victory!?! For the un-parents out there, please always be cognizant that your crotch goblins are very observant creatures. They quickly pick up, and emulate your piss poor habits.
I had just been cut-off in traffic. I had the right-of-way, but Susie-fucking-snowbird and her Q-Tip colored hair decided it was okay for her to disregard the octagon-shaped sign that states, "Bitch. Wait your turn." I muffled a shallow "Fuck You," but then noticed her look of absolute disgust as she passed by my car. Then I see, Cake, flipping her "the bird" from my side-view mirror. Sweet! Cake can count to one.
Then you have the moments that start cute, and go south. I have my nightly introvert-routine. I want to watch the national news, and then test my knowledge while watching Jeopardy afterwards. It is my much needed hour to decompress each night. My leave me the fuck alone time. A very chunky Cake rolled up to the couch, baby blanket in one hand and an unopened bag of Puff Cheetos in the other. He needed help murdering the bag open. I opened it, but he decided to plop down next to me as opposed to finger-painting the white curtains Cheetos orange with his little dick-beaters. He wanted to share.
I don't particularly like puffed Cheetos, but fuck it. It was an olive-branch from a terrorist. I obliged. I was five minutes into Jeopardy and I reached my hand into the bag, but something was off. It was plain-fucking-gross. I pull out a gooey, disgusting, wet fucking Cheeto. I initially thought there was something wrong with the packaging, but then I turn to see Cake, giving each puffed morsel a toddler blowjob. He sucked off every bit of flavoring, and then shoved the wet mess back in the back. I had just found his discards.
OP: Cake. They are not pistachios. You can eat the entire thing.
Cake: (Shoulder Shrug): I only like the cheese dad!
You Got Fucking Jokes
Cake was a huge fan of jokes, particularly knock-knock jokes. I don't know if he picked this up at daycare, or kindergarten. I know he didn't get it from grandpa, because he would be using the official F-word a bunch. I, as you man know, am a huge fan of humor. I love it. Humor gets me through the day, but I despise a poorly told joke, and I hold everyone to high standards. It was extremely frustrating to endure twenty jokes in a car ride home that all sucked.
Cake: Dad. Knock-Knock.
OP: Who is there?
Cake: Carrot.
OP: Carrot who?
Cake: (Hysterically laughing) I got you!
Imagine twenty jokes exactly like that, while your toddler-terrorist maniacally laughs. This particular day was long. I just wanted to rest when I got home. I merely wanted five minutes to myself before the chaos started. I had just endured 20 minutes of piss-poor comedy, but Cake was not done. He had, "one more joke dad."
Cake: Knock-Knock.
OP: Who is there?
Cake: Smell Mop
OP: Smell Mop Who?
Cake is now rolling on the floor. Kelly is rolling on the floor. Lola may have been worried about being attacked with a scissors, but even she was wondering what the hell was going on. What the fuck was I missing? Why was this specific knock-knock joke funny to Kelly? What the actual fuck?
OP: Smell Mop Who? Smell Mop Who?
The kids are still rolling, the dog is barking, and I just start saying it faster.
OP: Smell Mop Who?
Then Cake, in Cake fashion, lets out a thunderous fart with superb ass-acoustics. Just a sweet smell bum-rumble!
Cake: Dad. Smell My Poo!
OP: Smell Mop Who....SMELL MY POO!!!
I had just been out-potaoed, by the potato. Outwitted by a fucking four year old. Read whatever the hell you want Reader. Please be sure to let me know when you read a book that prepares you for that shit there. Smell my poo!
Cake is 11 now, and is currently in that transition phase of life. The phase where you go from optional deodorant to "Deodorant. NOW. EVERYDAY". He arrived home from soccer practice drenched in sweat last night. Sweating like a whore in Church with a disheveled look on his face.
Cake: Dad. Do I have to take a shower?
OP: Yes. It's not optional nor negotiable. Feet. Balls. Ass. NOW!
Cake: Can I take a bath?
OP: I don't care so long as water and soap hits your...
Cake: Feet, balls and...
OP: BUTT
Cake: Do you take baths?
OP: Not really.
Cake: Why?
OP: Because when I am really dirty, the bath water gets really dirty, and it don't feel as clean as I do when I take a shower.
Cake: Are showers better?
OP: For you they are.
Cake: Cause I get cleaner?
OP: No. Because I don't have to worry about your drowning in five inches of water.
Cake: (Huge Grin, and I was laughing) Bet you I could drown in a shower!
OP: I bet you could buddy!
Lastly, I remember something else during my rant response to the thought provoking Redditor. Punishment. Feel free to call me a bad parent, but I have adopted a technique that I use to extract confessions. It is pretty low-level shit, and there is no need to waterboard, yet. This specific technique is not mine, and I learned it during my torturous time at Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD). My God! Those nuns hated me and I hated them, but I learned this:
OP: Cake. Have a seat.
Cake: What?
OP: (Calm. Be Calm) What did you do wrong?
Cake: Ummm.
OP: You're sitting this chair for a reason, and I am disappointed in you.
Cake: I spent $20 dollars on V-Bucks (FAKE FUCKING MONEY) and didn't ask.
OP: No XBox for a week.
This is not the preferred technique and you MUST space it out. Parents don't have time to parent 24/7. Impossible. However, the rabbit jackals that live upstairs MUST believe you are capable of this. It's a lie, but they are necessary lies. But OP, you lie to your kids? But Reader, do you still think Santa Claus is real, or are you fucking Santa Claus? I am getting sick and tired of trying to create elaborate scenes for Elf on a Shelf too. Did I ruin it, or did you think he constructed that beautiful parachute and got stuck on the ceiling fan when he jump from a plane you didn't hear, in the middle of the night, that flew through our fucking house? Yeah. I lie.
Fellow Fuckery Readers. Thanks for rant-riding. I know it wasn't funny, but I just had to procrastinate about work. I needed a ten minute rant and no editing. Good news though. I have 26 full-blown stories on deck; I wrote unforgettable titles to I remember to detail the events for you. There are two Hawks, numerous Gunfighter Dads, and the introduction of many new characters to include OP. I will save off on mine, because I want you to "think less of me" sometime next year.
Be Rona free, Safe, and Cheers!

2020.09.17 06:35 djmoonbooties Holiday Farm Fire/McKenzie Area Evacuees Being Displaced Last Minute from UofO Area Shelter Hotels

UPDATE morning of 9/17: We just got a notice that we aren’t kicked out of the Holiday Inn! The Red Cross and others worked overnight and we hope this continues! Other hotels are still trying to kick out evacuees this morning for student move ins, so this is ongoing.
I am an evacuee and am reaching out on behalf of the McKenzie River residents who were just given less than 24 hour notice to move to the new shelter at Churchill High School in Eugene, Oregon. I've attached the notice which has a typo for the date and time to vacate the hotel. We were told it is for tomorrow at noon.
The Red Cross Cascades Region has been very helpful and the outpouring of love and support has been encouraging. Many of us are elderly, disabled, with young children and pets and are concerned due to COVID-19 risks. We cannot return to our homes as the majority of us are still at level 3 evacuation - so even if we wanted to return and set up camp, we cannot.
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Eugene Downtown - University, Comfort Suites University, Even Hotel, etc have had to move evacuees due to University of Oregon's Residence Hall Move-in Fall 2020 for freshmen and parents: https://housing.uoregon.edu/movein. More information can be found here: https://www.uoregon.edu/wildfire.
We are asking that anyone who wants to directly support our recovery efforts continue to donate to United Way of Lane County's Wildfire fund and the McKenzie Community Development Corporation. Details and updates can be found on our community recovery page here: https://mckenziecommunity.org/mckenzie-recovery/.
Thank you for your time and we hope that you can help our community.

2020.09.16 21:44 LordMosnar [Let’s Continue] 100 Villian Concepts

100+ Villain Concepts
Have you ever had an idea for a villain, not fully fleshed out, but with a cool appearance, backstory or abilities that you just can’t get out of your head? Feel free to contribute here!
I’m sorting out credits so that everyone gets credited with their respective ideas, but for now, if you want to see who came up with who, visit my original post.
Also, I might plan to use some of these for my campaigns, so if the name Olivia Ravafiel means anything to you, please go no further!
  1. A black dragonborn warlord with part of his face melted away by acid to reveal muscle and sinew, kinda like Two-Face. Perhaps this was due to a deformity in his draconis fundamentum, that made his acid breath hard to control, or vice versa. Perhaps this was the work of a rival that he vowed to one day destroy. Maybe he hides this deformity behind a mask or visor, or broadcasts it to his victims, terrifying them before their inevitable demise.
  2. A teifling assassin, cursed with hard-to-control teleportative powers, that had the tip of his tail cut off. He replaced it with a poisoned war barb, to whip around and stab people with, and learned to control his power and use it to his advantage. His name? The Nightcrawler. (I’d recommend giving him misty step as a bonus action.)
  3. An Oblex that lives in the town’s sewers, puppeting the townsfolk
  4. An insane doppelgänger con artist with a complex Scooby-Doo-esque plan in mind
  5. A reclusive but kind old wizard-druid who loved animals and nature, and lived in the catacombs under a small village’s chapel. Despite his creepy home he was well loved among the villagers, and often helped the clerics tend to the wounded and sick. One day he stopped turning up above ground. People say he had been studying something he refused to talk about. Unbeknownst to the village, the man had discovered a book of dark magic and arcane research. The book slowly started to corrupt the old man’s mind as he tryed to learn its secrets, and with it his goals and means to achieve them. Years later, the catacombs have been sealed up for decades, and everyone thinks he’s dead, but some say they hear, now and again, tapping noises. Someone... or something... is digging!
  6. A bandit lord that’s been experimenting with hemomancy (blood magic) to create unethical new spells
  7. A False Hydra
  8. A crazy gnomish artificer that designed (and now haunts) a Death Trap Manor (bonus points if it has rooms that move like a Rubik’s Cube)
  9. An awakened farm animal seeking to spark a revolution and have its revenge on its handlers
  10. A kind old wizard, possibly with memory problems, who unknowingly became a lich. The PCs are sent on a noble quest to slay the evil Lich-King, and find this old man that wants to help them. Later they come across the Lich’s lair, only to find out the old man is the lich.
  11. As an added twist, all the evil stuff said to have been done by the aforementioned “Lich-King” or his minions, is actually being done by a dragon or other villain trying to frame the old wizard. The wizard, after the realization HE’S the lich, and there’s no way he would do this stuff, helps the players defeat the real BBEG.
  12. The Black Swan: Your players have been hunted by (or were hunting) this legendary assassin for a while now. Perhaps they were employed by the BBEG, perhaps they sought revenge for a past slight, etc., etc. But whatever the reason, it’s all come down to this... The sky sparkles with stars over the cityscape, a crisp night-air breeze drifts from the open window. There is an unnatural whoosh of air. One player stirs in his sleep, opening a single eye. It widens in horror as the tall siloheutte fills the window. The figure’s wings flare, looking every inch an angel of death as it’s plague doctor-like mask scans the room. Beady black eyes glint from behind the mask, the knife gleaming in the moonlight... Two of them are dead before they even draw their weapons, and the rest are quickly and brutally dispatched... The last one struggles to get up, but his calf was slashed horribly. In desperation he seizes a lantern and smashes it in front of him, setting a fire between him and the assassin before swinging the shattered lantern at their mask’s beak... the assassin takes the blow unflinchingly, the glass shards tearing a gash across it. As the mask falls to tatters into the flame, the adventurer recoils at the sight of his killer’s true visage: that of a beautiful white swan. The mask’s “beak” was a real beak. A swan aarockroa. As the adventurer drifted into unconsciousness, the Black Swan tore into his flesh, beak and blade working in unison, he manages to utter, “You aren’t black...” ...A drunkard stumbles out of a nearby pub, as he looks up from vomiting, he spots a black shape moving across the sky, just as he passes out he hears the words “Fire! Fire on the top floor! Fire!”.... (Sorry for the creepypasta, this is just how I visualize this villain going about things. If you want my advice, have a mystery; someone’s been brutally murdering adventurers all over the city, the building’s they’re found in burned down.)
  13. A humble peasant that fights off adventurers that think they can just tramp all over his land take what they want. The more and more adventurers he just manages to defeat, the bigger the stockpile of magic items, weapons, loot, etc. from them he collects. More and more adventurers come to get this growing pile of loot, and Humble Peasant is forced to build up defenses, tame rare creatures as guards, make traps, etc. Eventually he realizes he’s created the ultimate dungeon and no one will ever leave him alone now. Cue mid-life crisis.
  14. A Triton TidecalleMage, who has succumbed to the whispers of the Lurkers in the Deep. Now they seek the downfall of the Triton Kingdom to further their Masters Plans.(Underwater Adventures need love too.)
  15. A Eladrin Rogue, who has worked for several Enemies of Party, but always manages to get away and is incredibly smug about it. They just enjoy killing beloved NPCs and cause property damage.
  16. A Hobgoblin Warlord Artificer, who has equipped his soldiers with all kinds of Steampunk-Gear. They is hoping for World Domination(although a decent sized city would be a good start), while working on their biggest Projekt: An Iron Colossus.
  17. A Bugbear Chieftain who killed their Hobgoblin Commander and took over the Legion. Their surprising Intelligence and Wisdom has bought them the Loyalty of the entire Legion. Even the lowest Goblins feel appreciated. Now they conquered the nearest Town.
  18. A Goblin Masterthief who leads the towns Thieves Guild. Thanks to their discrete Methods of communication, almost the entire guild doesn't know their Leader is the proprietor of the "Stone Sheep" Inn by the town gates.
  19. A Copper Dragonborn Town Guard who takes bribes and works together with the Thieves Guild. They do this purely for the money.
  20. A Duergar Mercenary Captain who works for any villian who can pay their prices. They are exiled royalty of his people and wants to amass riches to prove themselves.
  21. A horrifically ugly half elf Sorcerer. She has a crooked noise, terrible skin, patch hair, etc. She is absolutely obsessed with beauty and uses magic to charm individuals she finds beautiful to follow her and worship her for her beauty. She often walks around with glamours and will go great lengths to avoid seeing herself.
  22. A golem that has become sentient, murdered it's creator, disguised itself as it's creator, and is making more bothers and sisters (golems) to take over the country by murdering and switching places with random NPCs
  23. The spirit of an ancient tyrant, who was imprisoned inside his armor .
  24. An ancient pharaoh who has risen from his ancient grave, to claim the lands that once belonged to him
  25. An industrialized nation, ruled by highly militarized necromancers, who after fusing technology and magic, they've managed to raise a powerful army of undead beings prepared for combat.
  26. A powerful gang of pirates who travel across sea, sky and land, thanks to their magically enhanced ships.
  27. A changeling serial killer named “Smiler.” They exclusively kill servants of the good aligned gods and then dress up and pose their bodies in a way that mimics that god’s physical description. The twist is that the mask they wear (white porcelain, vacuous eyes, unnaturally wide smile) actually contains the personality of Smiler and the changeling is an unwitting host. Smiler is actually a serial killer from ages past who served one of the demon lords and whose soul now inhabits the mask. They attempt to fully possess anyone who finds it or tries to use it thus continuing their killing spree across centuries.
  28. A priest of a forgotten god, who's Family used to live in luxury, being the vhosen ones of said god. Their whole Town got destroyed by extremists of another Religion in their past, and prayig to their god is now forbidden. Now the only one left of their Clan, they have to pretend to be a cleric of a local deity in order to make a living and to prevent being hunted down. The local deity ist the one of the extremists who burned down the priests home, and they long for vengence. They want to bring back their old god to it's former glory, and have already prepared a blood ritual in secret. Every person in the small village they are in got marked with an invsible rune, and will be sacrificed once the ritual is complete.
  29. A mad gnome artificer in love with a necromancer. The couple spends their time tinkering with ways to augment undead creations with cybernetic limbs and organs
  30. an Awakened flock of carrion birds such as ravens, crows, vultures, etc. They’re a hive mind, secretly plotting to start a war so the eating will be good
  31. an ancient vampire, centuries old, who is dicking around with the political factions in a large city because he’s bored
  32. a Jack-the-ripper style serial killer, who seems to be following the steps to a dark ritual. Is he mad or is there much more danger here
  33. a real estate developer who has figured out a way to legally seize all means of production in a town, making him/her the de facto ruler
  34. a barbarian warlord, scarred by a wizard’s spell and determined to save the world from the dangers of the written word
  35. a madder-than-usual but incredibly charismatic Kua-toa street preacher who has figured out how to channel other species’ beliefs into god generation.
  36. a mindflayer who claims to be exposing the lies about his species (that they’re from the far future, that they’re from the Far Realms, etc.). But are they telling the truth or are they up to something even more subtle?
  37. an elvish gourmet who has developed a taste for sentient species
  38. moonbeast who has lost its “moonstone”
  39. one of the party’s former enemies, returned as a revenant. It has a year in which to get its bloody revenge on them and will stop at nothing to do so.
  40. a dark circus cult, making its own freaks for their freak show
  41. a powerful religious group which is slowly falling into evil. They have churches and followers everywhere and even the country’s ruler is an adherent. Gradually, their methods and tactics become more and more vicious and bloody. Has their god become corrupted or are there darker force at work within the church?
  42. a sentient and predatory “leak” from the Far Realms that seems to be doing what it can to expand and force its way into the Material Plane. It’s normally invisible/undetectable due to its abnormal physics at work, but its influence can be seen in warped objects, mutated people and animals, unnatural growth of weird plants and fungi. Think “Color Out Of Space” but with an agenda
  43. a fallen godling or demigod whose followers were on the losing end of a religious inquisition. It no longer has the income of faith necessary to keep it as a deity and desires that more than anything. It’s willing to do whatever is necessary to get back to Celestia.
  44. an artificecleric of a mechanical deity who has figured out the way (special prayers/words in a lost language) to hack the Modron hivemind and ultimately reality itself
  45. Stubs, a seemingly inept and clumsy goblin scout. The party is positive they’ve killed him multiple times, yet here he is again, seemingly keeping pace with them levelwise.
  46. The PC's deceased spouse. Their love for the PC led to them refusing to pass on. They will attempt to take the PC away so they can be together, forever. In death, they have become far more manipulative and subtle than they ever were in life.
  47. A dragon, out to protect the world from an extradimensional invader. He is attempting to conquer the world in an effort to bring everyone together against the alien- which is actually not hostile.
  48. Fate itself. One of the PCs is destined to bring doom upon the land, and unless they figure out how to cheat fate or bring about the prophecy in a non-destructive way, terrible things will ensue.
  49. Leader of a crime syndicate who has developed an immunity to poisons. Often has fun confronting their posioner(s) by sipping the food/drink and trying to dicern the poison based on taste. Takes a liking to those who come up with new concoctions.
  50. Scratches, a Cranium Rat Swarm who taunts the players telepathically, refuses to leave highly populated areas, and refuses to expose more than one or two rats at a time. It uses Command and Dominate Monster to make life miserable for the party, and thinks honorable combat is stupid crazy talk. It dominates guards into attacking the party, arrest them, etc. It dominates people into assaultring them or accusing them of crimes. It Commands nearby people to strike at them or scream or dive into harms way, anything to cause problems, hurt people or the party, all the while calling them fools for not joining the collective under its illithid masters.
  51. A military general leading a medium sized militia. Not happy with the outcome of a war years past, they plan to “finish” a battle that’s already over.
  52. The leader of a deadly cult. He has convinced hundreds to sacrifice themselves to a false god, and he plans to convince thousands more.
  53. A simple baker, who sells poisoned food to the townsfolk. Whether through dumb luck or their own genius, it’s almost impossible to trace the string of illnesses back to them.
  54. A greedy religious leader, funneling donations to the church into their own pockets. Lately the donations have turned less voluntary.
  55. Deep in an alchemist’s forgotten laboratory lies a brain in a jar. The brain’s original owner is long dead, but it’s psychic influence spans miles. It’s built an army of less intelligent beings, from wild animals to the undead.
  56. A gnome druid who was made fun of by his tinkerer pals. He retreats into nature, building a nature army to return to the city to get his revenge.
  57. A lich whose body was destroyed by past heroes, but his phylactery was merely damaged. After some time, his head and one arm regenerate, attached at the neck. He is now carried around by a Goliath bodyguard, as he pursues means to regain the rest of his body.
  58. The Black Winged Maiden - This beautiful black winged Aasimar had his sense of justice distorted by the BBEG and see herself as the savior of the this world (because of her wings or just for being an Aasimar) and see the PCs (or PC) as impostors that should be eliminated. She even could be arrogant with normal people, but she should be very obsessed with the PC (s). In my campaign she was the nemesis of a PC and a very good lancer user. Also made her wings a bit more powerful, granting not only a very good mobility but also a extra defense.
  59. A military general leading a medium sized militia. Not happy with the outcome of a war years past, they plan to “finish” a battle that’s already over.
  60. The leader of a deadly cult. He has convinced hundreds to sacrifice themselves to a false god, and he plans to convince thousands more.
  61. A simple baker, who sells poisoned food to the townsfolk. Whether through dumb luck or their own genius, it’s almost impossible to trace the string of illnesses back to them.
  62. A greedy religious leader, funneling donations to the church into their own pockets. Lately the donations have turned less voluntary.
  63. Deep in an alchemist’s forgotten laboratory lies a brain in a jar. The brain’s original owner is long dead, but it’s psychic influence spans miles. It’s built an army of less intelligent beings, from wild animals to the undead.
  64. Kay'ren: A ruthless thug that, upon entering any establishment, will immediately demand to speak to it's proprietor. They will then loudly and aggressively complain about things that never happened or that annoy them about said establishment. They refuse to leave unless they receive complimentary services and physically witness the termination of several employees. If confronted and forced to leave, they will immediately begin destroying any and all products within reach and then fall to the ground wailing until the guards come to slap them on the wrist and escort them to their VERY fancy carriage.
  65. A man who came into his necromantic magic after his wife died. He delves ever deeper into necromancy to find a way to bring her back as she was, not a mindless husk or a bloodthirsty monster. So he decides to do some good while buying himself time. For the low price of a year of your life he will bring the shade back for an hour. For your soul he'll shove the shade into a corpse and bring your loved one "back".
  66. A person who believes that everyone on the world is them. Therefore in order to experience everything life has to offer they go about "helping" themselves with all the various ways on can die
  67. A group of thugs who carry the weapons and wear the uniforms of a military unit of the distant past, led by a charismatic commander with the personality of a commander of the distant past.
  68. A flea which was subjected to a size-changing magical effect and grew to twice the height of a person (a la Monster In Paris), and is leaping all around the city scaring people. Perhaps it is savage and animalistic, or perhaps merely kindhearted and misunderstood.
    1. The Horsemen - a BBEG and three lieutenants, all in the vein of the biblical Four Horsemen. The party need to travel the land to acquire allies and artefacts to defeat the Horsemen one at a time. The Horsemen have divided up portions of the land and subjected the residents to their own brand of horrible hellscape - Pestilence, Famine, War and Death.
  69. In a politically charged city a Young Noble girl told a lie to get out of trouble. This could be political, religious or some other nature. A group of evil advisors then used this to start a civil war, and the chain of events were too far gone for the girl to admit the truth. She is now used as a symbol for this revolution and has no choice but to play along.
  70. Reginald Run-Ragged: A greasy-looking guy wearing red greasepaint and fake horns. He’s convinced several people that he is a devil, and won their souls through hard work and creative interpretation of the wording of bargains. His ambition is to accumulate enough souls to ascend as a diabolical divinity, and has a squad of effectively powerless warlocks from past bargains to do his bidding.
  71. Prioress Esmerelda: Head of a remote nunnery with suppressed sorcerous talent that’s slipped out of her control as she’s gone senile. The nunnery and everyone in it is caught in repeating the fractured dramas of Esmerelda’s misremembered life.
  72. Mustn’t-Tarry Bitterberry: A folkloric bogeyman of the region, a fey killer exiled from the Wild Hunt for his sheer brutality. Likes to kidnap people, or find people wandering the woods, and set up elaborate and deadly pursuits that always end with him lopping off their head as a trophy.
  73. The CEO emissary for an eldritch horror. He has used the vast knowledge of the elder brain to introduce futuristic technologies which have made him an incredibly wealthy businessman. Everyone celebrates this man as a genius and hero, but they don't realize that the smog and tarmac make the perfect habitat for eldritch horrors, and having a long lived, subservient populace makes for an excellent livestock pen.
  74. A warlord turned conquering emperor that had gotten in way over his head with a devil that he made a deal with.
  75. The inventor of the firearm, come to arm the serfs and lead a bloody revolution against the bourgeoisie.
  76. A world famous bard that has taken grave insult to a minor slight someone in the party has made about them. They now use their vast influence and the power of public opinion to make the party's lives a living hell.
  77. A socially awkward dragon with severe anxiety and acid reflux. Every time someone has come toward his cave he has belched fire on them and is far too nervous to set the record straight.
  78. The headmaster of an adventuring school. His philosophy of "laws are made to restrain the powerful" has churned out very well trained, well optimized, strike teams of murderhobos who fix problems, but cause even bigger problems.

2020.09.15 01:39 ass-muncher420 Why You Should Look At The MJ SECTOR - OTC’s look primed to run - Upcoming Catalyst $GCAN $KOSK

MJ is currently a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. Schedule I drugs are defined as having a high potential for abuse and no medical benefit. Other Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, ecstasy and peyote.
The MORE Act, which will deschedule cannabis & fund programs to repair the harms of the war on drugs, will hit the House floor week of 9/21/20.
The MORE Act - Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act - will expunge some cannabis records and create grant opportunities for people who have been negatively impacted by the criminalization of marijuana in addition to removing it from its Schedule I classification. Although it is Schedule 1, MJ is legal in 11 states.
4 Reasons why The MORE Act is a big deal: https://norml.org/blog/2020/09/10/four-reasons-why-the-more-act-vote-is-a-really-big-deal/
In November 2019, the House Judiciary Committee passed HR 3884—the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act by a 24-10 vote. When this happened, MJ stocks soared, including OTCs. Check it out here: https://cannabistraininguniversity.com/blog/marijuana-laws/marijuana-stocks-way-up-after-cannabis-legalization-bill-approved/
Love playing federal news. Next week’s House Vote seems like a no-brainer.
In conclusion, if you're looking for something relatively high risk/high reward (OTC will OTC) then you should look into playing MJ OTC's next week. There is potential for huge gains.
I'm looking at low floaters, low dilution OTC stocks. They run on news and volume. Penny stocks have been in the shitter for the past month or so, and I’ve had some decent success with OTC’s independently in very recent times rather than playing what is talked about on social media - so I figured I’d share.
My personal favorite and the only one I've done extensive research on is $GCAN. I've been loading on it for the past week in anticipation for the next few weeks.
Why I like $GCAN
$GCAN is MASSIVELY oversold. Bullish pattern, everything looks good. Lots of other good ones too like $KOSK. DO YOUR OWN DD!!!!

2020.09.13 07:12 allysonwonderlnd EVP Master List - Season 2

Edit: Thanks for the love!!
Already significantly a more EVP heavy season. Won't be including extra notes anymore and this will be the last intro. These are just going to keep getting longer. Will keep "Important Firsts" at the end of each season. If I missed anything, please let me know! Remember, it's best with more imput. I will not be offended if you correct me! Also, seasons 6-10 are currently free on the Travel Channel app. It was seasons 1-5 that were free. I'm wondering if each month, or every couple of weeks, they choose a different grouping of seasons.
I said this in a reply in season 1's, but you will notice if you are rewatching the series: I've made the executive decision to take out unexplained and disembodied from all of the show interpretations. Unless there's no better way to explain it. I'm writing all this down by hand. It saves me time and makes it more neat. They are all unexplained and disembodied anyway. Also, sticking to voices or possible human sounds. Music EVPs will not be included unless voices can be heard with it.
1. Preston Castle -
20:45 [Woman Yelling.] Agreeish, yelling or crying.
23:05 "I don't know." I'm not sure. I can hear words.
23:25 "Talk." Still not sure, but can hear "talk" more than the previous "I don't know."
24:35 "Get outta here." Whispery, but I hear just "get out."
25:15 "Come on, you can do it." I hear, "Come on, answer."
27:23 [Woman Scream.] Agreeish, could be an animal.
32:55 [Unintelligible Female Voice.] Didn't really hear anything. Maybe a sigh or heavy breath at best.
38:14 "Hey." Agree.
39:05 "Never again." Agreeish, could be, "never been."
2. Castillo De San Marcos -
19:34 [Scream.] Agree.
23:02 [Unintelligible Voice.] I hear, "What do you want?"
24:08 [Creepy Growl.] Honestly, I don't even know what they put on the screen. I didn't write anything down except for: HE SAID VOICE! IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO MY EAR AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE ALIENS FROM A QUIET PLACE! I AM SHOOKETH!! So, yeah lol I felt betrayed.
30:54 [Moaning.] Agree. Not in that way, pervs. Like a wounded soldier. Lol
36:20 [Unexplained Breath.] Agree.
3. La Purisima -
19:49 [Baby Crying.] Eh, not sure. It was weird. Like, "Eeaaaahhhh." (These notes make me laugh sometimes.)
21:55 [Unintelligible Voice.] I hear a painful scream or strange laugh.
22:30 "Come here." I don't hear it well, but can hear how they got there. Might actually be a response to, "What's your name?" Just not in English.
28:00 [Possible Spanish and the word "Visente".] Agree just because I don't know Spanish and can't counter it.
29:10 Repeat of 28:00, at this point they call it [Battle Cry.] I just think it sounds like a guy talking. Definitely seems residual though.
33:35 [Dog Cry.] Agreeish, could be a person.
35:07 "Do you belong here?" I don't hear it. Just garbled words.
35:32 "Lay down." Eh, could be. Could be, "get out" or "not now."
4. Magnolia Plantation -
25:30 "Hello." Eh, could have just been a cry or shout.
31:05 "Hey." Agree.
32:50 [Man Shouting.] Agree.
33:20 [Unexplained Music.] Agree, but can also hear what sounds like a singer with it or someone talking.
40:26 [Chanting.] Eh, I think the whole voodoo part made them expect more out of things. Maybe you had to be there to hear exactly what they did. I honestly hear someone whispering, "look at me."
41:15 "Aaron." I can hear a word, but I don't know about "Aaron."
5. Bird Cage Theatre -
27:30 "Craig." Eh, "Craig", "Greg", "Dread", "Bread"; too whispery
29:59 [Female Voice.] *I hear "Come up here." I think they confirmed that at the end of episode review.
31:39 "Come here." Agree.
32:02 "No, keep talking." Agree, could be "keep 'em talking."
32:20 "No." Agree.
33:00 [Unintelligible Voice.] Agree. Can hear multiple words, just can't make them out.
37:53 [Unintelligible Voice.] Agree.
6. Eastern State Penitentiary -
25:09 "I knew God....God." I hear words, but can't make them out.
25:51 "Hungry." Agree.
26:55 "Hi." I hear something more similar to "what?" There's too much of a word to just be "hi."
30:59 "Get out." Deductive reasoning only. I hear a "ch" or "guh" sound and "out". I can't actually hear the full "get out."
36:46 "Nick." Lol no. Maybe, "hey." Honestly sounds like a distant sneeze.
39:11 "Nick." Closer. At least this one has the "ni" sound. Still not sure.
39:31 [Scream.] Agree.
40:15 [Man Screaming.] I actually hear something along the lines of, "(words) doors locked." Like a guard saying, "get those doors locked."
7. Moon River Brewery -
22:04 "Don't do that." I can here words, just not those words lol
22:35 "I don't wanna." Agree, might be, "they won't wanna."
23:20 [Man Laughing.] That or "Give me that."
26:25 "It's the God." I hear a clear "s" at the end. So, I'm going with "it's the Gods" or "it's the guys".
29:20 [Yell. Along with "They got ___."] Agree. Also not sure what the last bit is. It's a clear two words or one word with 2 syllables with each enunciated.
31:17 An EVP I might have heard they did catch. Right after Nick says "show yourself", I heard a whispered "Zak." No one said anything to point it out or clarify it was one of them. Could have been Zak or Aaron whispering "what's that" and it's not anything. Thought I'd include it.
33:07 [Laugh.] Eh, maybe.
36:25 "I know." Agree.
8. Ancient Ram Inn -
19:55 [Growl.] Agree. Not counting this as the first prelockdown EVP since it's during, and because of, a ritual they did.
27:54 "I don't like you." Agreeish. Could be "I don't want to."
33:13 [Demonic Growl.] I really don't know. You can hear Zak also talking in the background. I can mainly just hear that.
33:38 "It's coming. I hear, "he's coming."
34:30 "Hate you." Agreeish. Could be, "take you."
36:35 "___, where are you?" Agree.
37:14 "Get out of here." I heard, "hey." Lol
38:35 [Laughter.] Agree.
39:31 [Noises and Voices.] Agree. It's a chaotic moment and I can't really make anything out.
40:25 "Don't temp me." Eh, maybe.
41:25 "I'm special." Eh, maybe. I think the English accents might be making it harder. I consume a lot of British TV, but they aren't in whispers lol
Important Firsts: Preston Castle is Zak's first possession and it's a shame they haven't gone back. Castillo De San Marcos is Aaron's first boat ride! Also, possibly the first ovulus type device? Machine speaks using energy, no text yet. Idk lol. Bird Cage Theatre is the first time Aaron is truly used as bait. "Never again," oh honey. Moon River Brewery is Nick's first possession and around 35:00, he gets a weird east coast accent. Ancient Ram Inn is Lady Snake's first episode, ugh. It's the trying too hard to appear powerful and the crushed velvet for me.
Edit for uniformity with the others

2020.09.11 16:03 Yerbmat [Ultros] [FC][LFM] Primal Tears FC looking to make a few more friends.

#NOH8

Their Chocolate Party and Wedding Favors are also a great option for small gatherings during this time. Tate’s Bake Shop also has gluten-free bakery options.
The bakery is currently open 7am-3pm daily for curbside pickup, and in-store shopping.

Primal Tears is a Tavern & Inn themed FC located on Ultros and we are a small group of friends who have been playing together since Heavensward.
Eorzea is full of adventure and things to do, and it all gets richer with good company and laughter. We may be salty at times, but we’re not mean spirited.

2020.09.05 13:19 TheEnvx My PCs fought the Vampire Spawn in Vallaki today. It wasn't pretty. This has caused me to think a lot about what I want out the campaign, and that I have a lot of work to do. Would love some input.

Questions at the bottom, context up here, TLDR in middle and at bottom.
I know this is a massive wall of text, I am sorry.
Hi. I'm a new DM. I've played in a few campaigns before, mostly homebrew. I decided to run Curse of Strahd because I adore the theme, and the usual DM wanted a break. The first 4 sessions of the campaign havn't gone terrirbly awful (my players seem to be enjoying it well enough, and still want to play!) however the most recent one has prompted me to think very hard about how I currently see the campaign progressing, and i've come to a realization;
I suck at this, but I really want to get better.
I don't think my players are a problem at all, so i'll only describe their characters.
We have a Human Blood Hunter, two Halfling Brothers: a Cleric and a Paladin, aswell as a goblin sorcerer.
I'm using the module on Roll20 to run the campaign, mixed with some in person sessions when players are able.
I also have a physical copy of the book I use to help prep, and for reference during the game.
I'm using Milestone level ups, because I have absolutely no reference for how to properly scale players up over time, and thought that would be easier manage than the XP based system.
The first three sessions went as follows: I ran a slightly modified Mysterious Visitors introduction. The party investigated some Vistani travelers, at the request of the Lady of Daggerford. The party agreed to accompany the Vistani into Barovia, and set off on their journey. They travel with the Vistani until they are engulfed in fog, after which the Vistani have disappeared, leaving the characters on the Old Svalich Road in the east of Barovia. I did not have the Vistani escort the players to Tser Pool, as I wanted to run the Death House introduction, but I prefered the story of the Mysterious Visitors start compared to others, and simply had the Vistani tell them visit Madame Eva when they were able. The party makes their way to the Village of Barovia, corralled by fog at the suggestion of the book, where the begin the Death House event.
It is here that I fully realize the fragility of low level characters. Children are pretty easy to roleplay, so I have little problem using Rose and Thorn to rope them in. The party foregoes exploring most of the house in favour of trying to get to baby walter as soon as they can, almost immediately moving to the third floor of the house. The cleric is then one shot the suit of armour on first turn of combat. The player understandably sounds a little frustrated by this, as am I. I'm afraid this thing is going to TPK them, and I nerf it's AC, by 2. I don't know if this was the right call, but it was still a concerning fight. Should I have done something else? Aside from altering stat blocks, which I don't recall doing after that, this more or less sets the tone for the Rest of Deathhouse. The party discovers the ghosts of the children, and finds their way down to the dungeon (leveling them up). The dungeon was a struggle, as I'm sure it's intended to be, except for the shambling mound. The party denies the cult, and begins battle with Mr. Decayer.
We're currently playing the game with Flanking rules, which i'm somewhat regretting, as it's seeming like a very drastic change to the flow of combat so far, and in hindsight a huge contributor to this fight being very easy for my party. Through flanking, and the power of the level 2 Blood Hunter with some lucky crits, the shambling mound is almost laughably easy. I would love thoughts on flanking rules, if you have any, I'm seriously considering removing them. Following the shambling mound fight, a player triggers the Shadow fight, which ends up being an intense backforth between the already injured party, and the shadows hunting them down. The fight culminates with 3/4 of the characters downed, with the sorcerer finishing the final shadow while very near death himself. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the intensity and challenge the deathhouse presented the players, and am confident they enjoyed it. If anything, i'm a little confused as to how certain encounters gave the party way more challenge than the climax "boss" fight did.
The player's rested in the dungeon, and laid the bones of children to rest. The party had a slightly less then expected amount trouble escaping the killer house now the traps awakened, but it was an overall uneventful escape from the house after the dungeon, leveling them up to level 3.
Moving around the Village of Barovia, the party had a conversation with Morgantha, then found Ismark at the tavern. The party agreed to meet Ireena, and proceeded to assist in the funeral of the late Burgomaster. I am aware that some suggest having the first Strahd encounter here, but chose to postpone it instead until the party began to escort Ireena to Vallaki (with Ismark). I don't know what exactly made me decide this, other than Strahd might see them as more Vunerable on the way to Vallaki as opposed to the Vilage. I no longer believe this, and almost regret my decision, which I'll get too soon. The party spends a night in the village, and sets out towards Vallaki in the morning.
The party finds Tser Pool Encampment on the way, and decides to meet Madame Eva. This is the first instance where I feel my inexperience with NPC roleplay may have really damaged the development of the game. I really don't feel like I did Madame Eva's character, or the other Vistani present there, the justice they deserve. (I think, atleast,) Between me still struggling to remember all the lore and who knows what, aswell as my not strong roleplay, I don't think the conversation went well with the characters. The party asked a lot of questions and, did get some information from her, but where very confused during the conversation, and the characters ended up disliking her. Not what I was going for. I think I could've done a lot better to make her intriguing, but I don't know how to convincingly roleplay.
The card reading revealed; Tome of Strahd in the Crypt of Mad Dog Grislek, Holy Symbol in the Abbey of St Markovia, and the Sunsword at the Gulthias tree, Strahd's Enemy: Noone, and Strahd in the Audience Hall. I didn't rig this, and I probably should have, but thats where everything is now I guess. I don't think i'm upset about it, barring some unforseen reason an item might be in a bad spot. I'm more concerened about Madame Eva.
The first Strahd encounter on the way to Vallaki: After the card reading, the party continues on the road to Vallaki, but are quickly confronted by Strahd riding in his carriage. He has come to ask for Ireena's hand, offering "support" for her father's death, and requests she return to the castle with her, charming her. After a short conversation, in which the party doesn't say much, Ismark tries to stop Ireena from going with Strahd by attacking him. 13 Wolves now ambush the party from the woods surrounding. I rolled this encounter off strahd's table, because I'm an idiot. I realize now that I should've just picked/built an encounter that better suited the narrative. This ended up being an overwhelming amount of opposition, even with Strahd taking a backseat role in the fight. Severely wounding Ismark and the party, the wolves leave very little to no breathing room to prevent Strahd from skipping away with Ireena, which he does.
I regret this for two main reasons. 1. I don't feel like gave an opportunity for the party to prevent Ireena from being captured, which is kindof a shitty feeling for them, and bad of me as the DM. 2. I've stolen Ireena way too quickly in the campaign, preventing the players from developing their relationship with a her, as well as preventing other narratives involving her from playing out, and now have to find a way to smoothly unfuck myself. Kinda seems like stealing Ireena early is going to have some consequences, not least of which in the area of developing Strahd as a character.
TLDR: Deathhouse was dangerous but fun. Iffy on using flanking rules though. Nerfing stat blocks mid fight, should I ever do this? Feel like I mucked up Madame Eva with poor roleplay, not sure how to improve moving forward. Ambushed party with way too may monsters and took away agency, resulting in a critical NPC (Ireena) being removed way sooner than I probably wanted, on the way to Vallaki
The Vampire Spawn in Vallaki:
So now the party has reached Vallaki, without Ireena. They spend the night at the Inn. Ismark is not happy, obviously, but I have no idea what I'm going to do with his character at this point. The party decides to go chat with the Baron, who warns them about Lady Fiona being a devil worshiper, and asks them to be special guests at the upcoming Festival, basic conversation, no real reason for him to dislike the party at this point. After this conversation, the party decides to talk to Father Lucian (the paladin got bit by a werewolf earlier btw, and is concerned). The Father doesn't really know how to help that (right?), but instead sends them after the Bones of St Andral. Talk to Yeska -> Talk to Milivoj -> To the Coffin Maker's Shop, EZPZ. Even I didn't know what was about to transpire.
I knew there was 6 vampire spawn here, however, I didn't completely realize, how absolutely and ridiculously outmatched 4 level 3 PCs are by 6 vampire spawn. They more or less force their way into the Shop, Henrik relents and informs the characters of their impending doom upstairs. Like me, they do not realize how bad vampires truly are for them. Before even finding the bones, they bust into one of the crates, queue all the vampire spawn ready to rumble. If I had known, I might have tried to at least make them level 4 before this encounter, however there is no turning back now.
The battle lasts over 5 hours of OOC play time, and can only be described as a Brutal, unfair, bloodbath. After a few rounds of being rag-dolled around the room, the characters realize that this is pretty bad, and decide to get out of the building. All the melee characters have already been unconscious multiple times at this point, the cleric and paladin bouncing around points of healing to keep people out of Deathsaves. The goblin sorcerer books it down the stairs and out of the house, but not before lighting the building on fire, because why not? The Cleric runs off into the other room to find the bones really quick because dammit i'm gonna finish the quest even if it kills us. The Paladin and Bloodhunter (completely savaged even through their AC spells and beastform) remain in the burning room.
The Bloodhunter is unconscious, the paladin too if not for a lucky 20 death save that gave him 1 hp directly prior and woke him up. He squeezes a little bit more healing out of himself and jumps out a window, surviving the fall. The Cleric BARELY finds the bones in time, returns to give the Blood hunter 1 hp, who both charge out of the burning building. Outside they find that Henrik has alerted some town guards who have begun to rally and come over! Hurray, we're saved, Right? Wrong.
The vampires waltz out of the building and the bloodbath portion begins. Over many rounds, the vampires begin mincing guards left and rift, who aren't that strong with 11hp and 16AC versus +6 multiattack vampires. Over many rounds, a total of 12 guards, Izek, Szoldar & Yevgeni, and about 30 commoners join the battle. The PC's, who are miraculous still all living through more lucky 20 death saves, go down many times. It isn't until the commoners begin piling into the meat grinder than the sheer number of bodies gives the players some respite.
A total of over 24 guards/commoners are killed before the battle ends, only managing to kill 2 vampire spawn through some serious focus fire. The street is a river blood, mangled equipment, and shredded corpses. The remaining commoners, and single standing guard corral the 4 vampire spawn out the eastern gate of the city. My logic here for the vampire spawn was that, after being discovered, would try to accomplish their goal of assaulting the church and ultimately the Father, right as they're discovered as opposed to in a few days. After realizing, that their going to have to go through practically the entire town to do so, decide to make their escape and leave town, and Strahd wouldn't want them to completely level the town(?). The players are mentally exhausted, and we end the session with them callously returning the bones to a mortified Father Lucian, and dropping dead at the Inn.
TLDR: Turns out 6 Vampire Spawn kinda slap. Level 3 party has their morale absolutely obliterated, but everyone somehow survives because I make the bad guys go away, but not before slaying half the town guard and many commoners. Also, I still suck at Roleplay.
Essentially, there 3 main points I'm thinking about now.
Questions:
  1. What did I do wrong, especially pertaining to the Vampire Spawn fight in Vallaki?
  2. How do I smoothly retrieve Ireena from Strahd's grasp, or should I even bother?
  3. What do I do with Ismark's Character?
  4. When my characters wander into an encounter far outside their level, should I just let them get wiped? (I'm planning on playing with adventure's league res mechanics until level 5) - We havn't even gone to the windmill yet
  5. What is a reasonable Milestone to give them level 4? Can level 3 characters actually accomplish anything in Curse of Strahd without getting smashed?
  6. How do I make my roleplay more convincing / How do I better portray what I want out of each character?
  7. How should I go about prepping each NPC for roleplay?
Any feedback would be very appreciated, I can see this sub is going to be a very useful hub of a lot of resources, and i've only just started working through it, I apologies if some of these resources answer any of my questions and I haven't found them yet.
I'm going to sleep now cause i'm really tired, i'll respond to this later

A young woman finds herself dead and is given the chance to reincarnate in another world with cheat-like magic powers. She accepts, only to find that the world treats magic users the same way ours did— by hunting them down and killing them for heresy.
My name is MELAS?! As in Salem backwards? Oh my God, and my mother is a Witch. I am SO going to be burned at the stake!

It was morning when I woke up.
I pushed the nice, thick blanket off of me, as I rolled comfortably off of the queen sized bed. I glanced out the silk drapes, out into the quiet street as people went about their day. I rubbed at my eyes—
Waitaminute, this is not my bed! This is not my room! Where am I?!
I frantically searched myself for all my belongings, and found that I still had everything on me. Just then, the door to the room creaked opened.
“Damned Humans, always trying to rip— oh, you’re awake.”
A stout man with a broad chest stepped in, carrying something on his hand. It was Gennady, and he walked up to me.
“I just bought these from—” he started, but was cut off by me.
“W-w-why am I in your room?” I asked, aghast.
“Oh come off it, lass. We’re not in the Puer Kingdom. I just brought you here to rest after you passed out yesterday,” Gennady said, snorting.
“After I passed out?” I blinked away my tiredness, trying to remember what happened the day before.
My legs were still sore from walking for so long, and my arms felt slightly heavier than normal But I felt a different kind of exhaustion; an inexplicable emptiness inside of me. It was not like I was drained of energy— it felt more like I was too tired to even access the energy.
Then I remembered the events that transpired: walking dozens of miles, and hiking up parts of a mountain; fighting a Horned Viper and six Crawlers; entering a cave, full of Abominations…
And killing them all.
My eyes widened as the image of the Atrocity looking up at me reappeared in my head. I had to have been casting spells down the pit nonstop for over an hour. There were thousands of Abominations, and they did not attack me; not after the Atrocity saw me.
I almost felt bad about killing them; they were a danger to everyone in the area, yet they ignored me. The Atrocity allowed me to kill them, stopping its ‘friends’ (for the lack of a better term) from attacking me. Especially since it was the Abominations that technically helped save me from slavery back in Bys. I knew the reason had something to do with that jerk god who killed me and brought me to this world, but I did not know why he needed, or wanted, me alive.
My thoughts were quickly interrupted by the smell of food. I felt my mouth watering as Gennady placed a small plate of fried potatoes in front of me. It almost looked like french fries, but those did not exist in this world since neither the French nor did Belgians exist in this world; it was similar— like a fusion of potato wedges and fries, except shaped more like a block. In the plate was also a mixture of some dried vegetables along with small bits of meat.
“Here, you go,” the Dwarf said, handing me my eating utensils. “You haven’t eaten in at least a day. Maybe more depending on when your last meal was.”
I drew my lips up into a smile as I thanked him. I immediately dug in, consuming everything I could with a ravenous hunger. I continued to chow down on my meal for another five minutes, before slowing down enough to speak with Gennady.
“So,” I started, still chewing on a piece of meat, “how long was I out?”
“You passed out before noon, and now it’s a few hours to noon the day after. How long do you think you slept?”
“Almost 24 hours? That’s… a long time,” I whistled, before biting a down on a large chunk of fried potatoes.
“It is,” he said in agreement. “But it makes sense, given how tired you must’ve been.”
“Mhm,” I mumbled a sound in agreement. “Got anything to drink?” I asked.
“Here” Gennady passed me a metal flask.
I opened the lid, gulping down a strange liquid. It tasted almost sweet, but with a slight hint of fruit and earth. I lowered the flask and handed it back to the Dwarf. “This is alcohol,” I said, frowning. It was strong.
“Yeah, one of the best ones. In fact, it’s probably the best one you can find around here. How do ya like it?” The Dwarf gave me a grin under his bushy beard.
“I was hoping to hydrate myself with something like water, not to get drunk in the morning,” I said, voice flat.
“Gah, fine.” Gennady sighed, walking to his backpack laying on the corner of a room. He pulled out a bottle of water as he murmured to himself. “I don’t understand you Humans. You don’t let your children drink a good beer until they’re 16. What fun are you supposed to have until then? Y’know, the Taw Kingdom lets Dwarven kids as young as 10 drink alcohol— like 13 in Human years. Once you start growing into an adult, you should be allowed to start drinking too.”
I shrugged. “Different cultures, different countries. I don’t think the Free Lands had any legal drinking age. I doubt all Dwarven countries have the same laws too. Same thing with us Humans…” I trailed off, feeling something was off.
Then it hit me like a truck traveling at 50mph.
How does he know I’m Human? Don’t I have a… mask? Where’s my mask?!
I stood up, touching my face. My fingers found skin, and not the cold hard surface of a mask. I realized that I had been eating the entire time, face exposed to the Dwarf.
Gennady snorted in response to what I said, seemingly not noticing me staring at him in shock.
“You know, I knew you weren’t just your average Aria, but to think you were actually a Human girl the entire time? I was—”
“You took off my mask while I was sleeping?” I yelled, pointing a trembling finger at him. “That’s… that’s… a violation of my privacy! Why would you do that?!”
Gennady took a step back, surprised at my sudden outburst. “Now calm down—”
“How can I be calm? What did you do to me last night? How would I know if…” I hesitated, and drew my dagger. “What else did you do?”
“I told you, Aria, I did nothing,” the Dwarf backed further away from me, warily eyeing the black blade in my hand. “Listen to me: you fell unconscious after you destroyed all the Abominations, right?”
I nodded slowly, still with my weapon out, and watching out for any sudden movements.
“Then, I had to check if you were fine— if you were breathing. I had to know whether you suffocated from the smoke and whether you were still alive. So I removed your mask and checked your pulse, before running out of the cave with you on my back. After that, I drove you to my inn, and you’ve been sleeping here since. That’s all that happened, I swear it on my beard!”
I raised an eyebrow at that. It was not a skeptical look I gave him, but more of a confused one. “You… swear it on your beard?”
“Yes, m’beard,” he said his Dwarvish accent. “If I’m lying, I’ll shave it all off. The size of a Dwarf’s beard makes him more attractive, see? Women love it big!”
I sighed, lowering my weapon and rolling my eyes simultaneously. “That’s inappropriate.”
“It was not an innuendo,” Gennady said, relaxing his shoulders as I sheathed my dagger.
“I guess I’ll believe you for now. At the very least, you haven’t tried killing me, so there’s that.”
The Dwarf took a seat, clutching a hand on his chest. “Sacred piss, girl, this is the second time you tried to kill me in two days. Let’s not make it a habit, shall we?”
“Only if you don’t tell anyone what you saw,” I said, reaching for my mask which I found inside of a drawer. I caught myself, realizing that I had no reason to wear it now and that I did not actually enjoy wearing it because of how uncomfortable it felt, then went back to my food to continue eating.
“And you’re not going to threaten me with that thing again to do that, are ya? Make me promise to stay quiet, else you’d kill me.”
“No,” I said, finishing up my meal. “I won’t threaten you again. I think I’ve done that enough.” Gennady snorted, as I took a sip of water. “However,” I continued, “I will have to figure out how I’m going to keep your mouth shut. So if you can tell me why exactly I should trust you won’t go telling the Church that the daughter of the Fiend is in Locke, then maybe it might prevent me from doing other unsavory things I don’t like.”
I was trying to be threatening with my words, rather than just overt violence; it might seem harsh— actually, it was very harsh. I immediately regretted saying it, but kept it from showing on my face. Next time, I’ll try being a good cop rather than a bad cop.
My guilt only doubled as the Dwarf’s eyes bulged like an insect, as I finished speaking. Was I that menacing? Perhaps saying it while cutting a piece of meat with a knife like in movies really worked. Gennady opened his mouth to speak—
“Wait, you’re the daughter of the Fiend?!”
I fell out of the bed.
“What? You mean you didn’t know that?!” I exclaimed. “You mean I just revealed that myself by accident?”
I’m an idiot! Idiot! Stupid! Idiot!
I smacked my head on the floor a few times, before picking myself up and walking towards a desk to slam my forehead into.
Gennady quickly leaned forward, bringing a finger to his mouth. “What are you doing, keep it down. Stop making so much noise!”
I paused, cocking my head at his reaction.
The Dwarf came close to me, speaking so softly I could barely hear him. “Is that really true? You’re talking about the Fiend, right? Valeria of the Shadow’s Evangelium?”
I bit my lower lip, mentally cursing at myself.
“...yes.”
There was no use hiding it, since I literally just revealed it. Gennady walked over to a chair, rubbing at his forehead. “Goddess grace us. That would explain how you were so good with magic. With all those spells you were throwing around, I’d have thought you were at least B Rank like me. Possibly even higher!
“You’re lucky the walls in this inn are thick, lass. If anyone heard you, and if they believed you, you’d have Inquisitors coming down on you in an instant. There’s no way you’d survive the year. Even if you can fight off Inquisitors, they could even send a Saint or a Saintess. And I estimate their average strength to be at S Rank. They’re dangerous. And you should know that.”
“I do,” I said, realizing that he knew what happened to my mom. And of course he would. Apparently, when the Holy Xan Empire announced it a few months back, they made sure to keep it on the news for over a week. Anyone who had access to a television would know that Saint Theron slew my mom in battle, aided by a group of Inquisitors— conveniently leaving out the fact that they attacked her while she was unprepared and not looking for a fight.
Gennady slumped over in his chair. “Lass, you do realize that these are the things you have to be tight lipped about, right? I didn’t think about it when I saw you at first, but now that you mention it, I can see the resemblance. You should be more careful!”
“I know,” I sighed, “but I just thought that you knew. I don’t know why, but I just assumed…”
Every individual of note I had met so far who was unbothered by my magic somehow seemed to easily draw the connection between me and my mom; I mistakenly assumed Gennady would be the same, and let it slip. I need to work on being more covert. I’m too new to this! I resolved myself for the future.
For now, I turned to Gennady who was still looking stressed in his seat.
“What are you going to do now?” I asked, studying any visible changes in how he seemed to regard me.
The Dwarf glanced back at me, and I did not notice any fear; he was unnerved, but by something else other than me.
“I already told you, Aria— wait, that’s not even your real name, is it?”
I did not respond, but he shook his head.
“Doesn’t matter,” Gennady said, continuing from where he left off. “I’m not going to tell anyone. I, myself, don’t hold anything against the Fiend. The Shadow’s Evangelium caused more trouble over at Soli than here in Vitae, unlike the Dark Crusaders. What I’m worried about is you, lass.”
“Me?” I cocked an eyebrow.
“Yes, you.” Gennady stood up, and began pacing back and forth the room. “What are you going to do now? Your mother was one of the most wanted people in the entire world. She was regarded as a danger to any single Saint. If a group of Inquisitors were to have somehow run into her, their orders were to avoid engaging and to simply report on her location. The Mercenaries Guild had a bounty starting at a hundred gold just on getting any verifiable information on her. A thousand gold for her location. And 10,000 gold for her head.
“And that was just the Mercenaries Guild. In Vitae alone, the various countries would have equaled at least that much. And the Holy Xan Empire itself had a hundred thousand gold bounty for the person who would kill the Fiend.”
I felt a breath get caught in my throat. A hundred thousand gold? For my mom? “B-but why?” I managed to ask the question.
“For her crimes,” Gennady said softly, and cut me off before I could protest. “I’m sorry, I know you don’t want to hear this, but your mother committed many terrible deeds. Perhaps not always personally, but she was one of the core leaders of the Shadow’s Evangelium. They once destroyed an entire city— Xantioch— razing it to the ground and slaughtering all of its inhabitants. From what I’ve heard, there were no survivors.”
I wanted to deny it; I wanted to tell the Dwarf that he was wrong. Yet I remembered how my mom avoided talking of her past— how she spoke little of the Shadow’s Evangelium, and pushed me against learning magic. It… made sense.
Even if my mom did not directly participate in such acts, she must have been responsible somehow. Why else would she hide it from me? Why else would she have gone into hiding? I stayed quiet, and Gennady noticed this.
He cleared his throat. “I’m sure your mother was not like this when you knew her, Aria. And there are some other things which made the bounty on her head jump even higher than it should be— inconsequential things like violating Holy Law and trespassing on Holy Lands— but it is true the Shadow’s Evangelium committed grave sins. I don’t know how exaggerated they are since most of it happened when I was still a young lad, however there is some truth to it. And from that truth, you should know you are in danger. The Church will come for you, it is only a matter of time.”
My brows arched darkly over my eyes. I felt a sense of dread, trepidation of what was to come. It was a warning, but it almost felt like a prophecy. I knew the Holy Xan Empire would eventually come after me— they would not be satisfied with just killing my mom once they found out I could do magic. Even a Saint— one of their righteous heroes of justice— watched idly by as his friend struck out to kill me for casting a single spell.
Gennady continued.
“I know you say you’re not with the Dark Crusaders, and maybe it’s for the same reason why your mother went into hiding instead of joining the group, but I have to recommend that practicality should hold priority over any moral obligation you feel you might have in this situation. If you want, I know a few members I could introduce you to.”
“Not happening,” I said, sighing. I looked up at the ceiling as Gennady tilted his head to the side.
“Why not—”
“I already tried joining them, Gennady. It didn’t work out.” I clenched my fists into a ball for a moment, then loosed my grip. “It never works out,” I whispered, feeling a sense of depression I had not felt since my time as a slave.
I was not sure if Gennady heard the second part of what I said, but he quieted for a while; neither of us spoke, as the clock on the wall ticked a minute away.
“Aria,” the Dwarf said, finally breaking the silence. “I only just met you, but I can tell, you’re a good lass. Maybe a bit paranoid, however I know it must be for good reason. I don’t believe I can, in good faith, allow you to just die. So I have a suggestion.”
“A suggestion?”
“I told you I’m from the Taw Kingdom, right? Well I’m actually not just an ordinary Dwarf from there, although I probably implied as much. I am an inventor, and I used to be their head Scientist. Until I got replaced by that damned fool from the Holy Xan Empire.”
I jerked, head snapping to look at him. “You are— uh, I mean, you were?”
“Yes I was. Is that so surprising?” Gennady asked, folding his arms.
“No! I mean, you said you’re good at Tinkering and I believed you. It’s just that…” I trailed off.
“Just what?” The Dwarf’s eyes bore into me, compelling me to explain myself.
“I thought you might’ve been some kind of exiled Dwarf, you know? Like kicked out from your country because of some disagreement with the King?”
“Hah,” he snorted. “Good one! But the King begged me not to go. Adilet gave me another position— he said it would pay well. I left anyway. I did not want to deal with that Human.”
“Bertrand?” I asked, remembering him mention that name before.
Gennady shook his head. “It does not matter. What matters now is that my Kingdom would take you in. We may be… allied with the Holy Xan Empire. And we are plagued by the Dark Crusaders constantly whisking away our Goblin population and turning them into thieves and thugs for their own use. But I believe that the Taw Kingdom would be willing to accept you if I spoke to the right people.”
“I… heard,” I said, glad that Felix was not lying to me and luring me into a trap. “You guys provide asylum to the enemies of the Holy Xan Empire, right?”
“To most of them. The ones that we think would piss ‘em off. Y’know, we even had a division of spellcasters once. Heretics that either practiced magic for their own benefit or were part of the Dark Crusaders whom we arrested, and were given the chance to earn their freedom. The Church threw such a hissy fit, it was hilarious. Too bad it didn’t work out.”
“Why didn’t it work out?” I asked. “Did you guys cede to the Holy Xan Empire’s demands?”
“No. They all died during an incident. A disaster.” Gennady’s tone became significantly more somber. “And everyone’s been too scared to join it ever since. They’d rather spend a few years rotting in the dungeon before being set free, than risk their lives.”
I decided not to press the issue, since it did not look like he was going to talk more about it anyways; I asked another question instead.
“Why do this for me? We only just met, Gennady. How do you know I’m ‘good’, as you said?”
“Other than the fact that you went out of your way to wipe out an entire horde of Abominations when you could have very easily have not done anything about it, and avoided getting discovered for your magic?” The Dwarf placed a hand on my shoulder, and smiled. “You also saved my life. When that Amalgam came up at me and I froze up, you protected me. So I owe you one.”
“But I nearly killed you,” I said, cringing at the thought.
“Hm, you did try. And you would have succeeded very easily, if you did not give me that entire monologue telling me how much you did not want to do it. Tell me now: do you really think you would have gone through with it?” Gennady asked, staring into my eyes, and I into his.
This was the first time I noticed, but Gennady had a kindly way of looking at people. He might have been loud, and slightly too intimate with people he just met, but he was a good man. His hazel green eyes had a glint to it which spoke of his intelligence, yet one would assume from his personality that he was nothing more than a rough brute; there was a depth to him, just like there was a depth to everyone else, which I found piquing my curiosity.
I hesitated.
Clearly he thought I would have changed my mind in the last second even if he did not show me he could cast magic— that was the answer he already had in his head. Yet, I found myself doubting that; perhaps I was cynical, or perhaps I did not know myself as well as I thought I did, but I did not have as much faith in myself as he seemed to have.
Gennady, however, seemed to take my lack of a response as a confirmation. “Exactly,” he said, stepping away from me.
“Are you really going to be bringing me to Taw?” I asked, gesturing at a book on the table. “Don’t you have to complete your bestiary or something? I don’t want to trouble you, Gennady. I’ll accept maybe just a written letter of recommendation? Or a list of people I could speak with.”
I did not know why I tried to reject his help; this was a chance— an opportunity that most others would never get. I just felt… uncertain. I did not know why I did, but something unsettled me. Not the man himself— as said, I thought he was interesting.
But Gennady just waved his hand dismissively.
“I don’t know how far a simple letter could take you, Aria. And you don’t have to be concerned about me. I was planning to return soon, since most of my bestiary is complete. Plus, I’m sure the King would like to hear how I’d rank the Abominations. The Holy Xan Empire only provided descriptions, but never what their abilities would be. And from what I’ve seen so far, it seems they either gave us bad information, or outdated information. There should not have been an Atrocity here. Oh, and speaking of…”
The Dwarf pulled out a small pouch full of gold coins, and gave it to me.
“This is for you. The reward for the extermination of the Abominations.”
“This?” I rapidly closed and opened my eyes. “This is a lot of gold!”
“I told the Hunters Guild that there were a lot more Abominations than they estimated, and about the Atrocity. So that they’ll be on higher alert throughout the continent. This can’t just be an isolated incident.”
“Wait, how did you explain how you wiped them all out?” I asked, still staring at the heavy pouch of gold sitting on the palm of my hands. Is it glittering? I’m pretty sure it’s glittering!
“I just told them I used this,” Gennady said, pointing at the bazooka-cannon looking weapon he showed me yesterday. “They don’t know that it doesn’t work, but they know about my background, so they just assumed I was telling the truth. They’re sending people to confirm that the Abominations are gone, but this is the initial payment. If they find that we’re telling the truth, they’ll probably pay us a lot more gold in the future, and we can collect it in any of the big Hunters Guild branches if we can’t just wait here for them to check.”
I opened my mouth to speak, but Gennady just shot me a wink.
“Don’t worry, I already took my cut.”
It looked up at the Dwarf, then back down to the gold coins. It really was a lot of gold. Almost a hundred. More than I had held in my entire life.
Slowly, I brought my hands forward, whilst bowing my head, offering the gold to Gennady. The man just blinked.
“What are you doing, lass. I told you—”
“This is a bribe,” I said, looking back up. “For you to keep my secret and bring me to Taw.”
“What are you even saying?” the Dwarf asked, perplexed at my sudden offer.
“You told me yesterday, didn’t you? Most people would accept bribes and stay quiet. Well half of this is for you to stay quiet, and the other is payment for you to escort me to Taw. You’re a Hunter, right? There are Monsters along the way, and I can’t protect myself,” I said, pushing the pouch to the man’s chest. “That’s our contract.”
“Can’t protect—” Gennady sputtered. “Lass, are you even listening to yourself? You’re a Hunter! Of course you—”
“I’m not a Hunter,” I said, cutting him off. “Aria is a Hunter, but not me. I’m just a regular little girl. Someone who needs protection. So will you accept my offer? Do you think the terms of the agreement are fair?”
Gennady furrowed his brow, not out of irritation, but more out of bewilderment. “Personally, I think this contract is skewed in my favor quite significantly. But if you’re trying to give me free money, then I guess I’ll take it. Could probably buy a few Superior mana crystals with this.”
I smiled. “Thank you,” I said, suddenly feeling better about myself.
“Hah, no worries, lass. Or, do I call you ‘little Missus’ now?”
I paused, not sure of what to say. After a moment’s deliberation, I decided to say it anyways.
“My name is Melas, not ‘little Missus’. I’d prefer it if you call me by my appropriate name,” I said, emphasizing the last part to distinguish between myself and ‘Aria’. Although we really were just the same person.
“Alright then, Melas,” Gennady said, slapping me on the back. I glared at him, rubbing at my back as he pointed a thumb at himself and grinned. “I’ll be bringing you to the Taw Kingdom safe and sound, don’t you worry about it!”
And unlike before, I was less worried now. I was not sure why he was helping me, but I knew for sure that he had a reason to keep his promise now. I was still uncomfortable, but more reassured.
[Next Chapter]

Author's Note:
Melas feels uncomfortable because she's slightly paranoid. By giving Gennady an incentive to actually help her out, it stifles her paranoia that his apparent goodwill might secretly be a ploy for something else-- like take advantage of her, or somehow lead her to a trap. She doesn't exactly realize this, of course, and since this is narrated in First Person, I can't outright say it. Hopefully it was implied well enough.
Also, new friend gained. Achievement unlocked: Possible Recurring Character?!
We'll see whether Gennady sticks around ;)

The Cosmogony (Page 35) [a poem by an unnamed Meletian sage that includes several (sometimes conflicting) tales of the creation of the world and beyond.]
The Origin of Monsters (Page 35) [notable as an attempt to find commonality in a number of different tales about the birth of dragons. It also describes how Pharika hid secrets in the blood of basilisks, how the spirits of great warriors are reincarnated in the form of manticores, and dozens of other tales.]
The Theriad (Epic Poem) (Page 35) [describes the exploits of various champions of Heliod, all of whom are simply called "the Champion," as if they were a single individual. Because the identities of the heroes aren't mentioned, the tales have more to say about the character of Heliod than about any champion's mortal deeds.]
The Callapheia (Page 35) [ is about the exploits of a single mortal hero, Callaphe the Mariner, who snuck into Mount Velus and stole Purphoros's tears, hid behind Phenax and wrote down his secrets, and raced Thassa at the edge of the world before sailing into Nyx. Also serves as something of a gazetteer of Theros, describing its various lands and their inhabitants, at least as they existed some centuries ago.]
